What is metallic bonding?
what is the special force called?
Metal atoms are held together by a sea of valence electrons, meaning each atom gives up an electron. the negative delocalised electrons and the positive atom is held together by a electrostatic force.
What is an alloy?
What are the advantages of alloys?
An alloy is a mixture of metals.
Alloys are stronger and harder than pure metals because the different shapes of atoms in an alloy prohibit the metal from being weak and malleable (shapeable)
what are memory metals?
Memory metals are a type of alloys which remember their original shape. So if you were to deform them, in a certain temperature they would go back to their original form.
What are the two methods for extraction?
Electrolysis and displacement.
What is electrolysis?
Explain Cathodes and anodes.
electrolysis is the process of separating metal compounds using electricity.
There is a solution and two metal rods are hooked up to a battery. One has a negative charge (cathode), and the other has a positive charge (anode). In the solution the cations go to the cathode and the anions go to the anode. breaking down the substance for example copper sulfate.
Explain displacement
Displacement is when a more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from its compound.
What are the reactivity series?
its the scale of metals from the least to the most reactive metals. the most reactive ones are on the top and the less reactive ones are on the bottom.
Example an experiment for displacement.
Will Magnesium displace silver in silvernitrade?
Why and how?
yes, because magnesium is more reactive than silver therefor the nitrade chooses to displace silver with magnesium. Silver will then build on magnesium and the solution will turn to magnesium nitrade.
simplified: silver becomes the third wheel
Why is carbon (non-metal) in the reactivity series?
Carbon is not a metal but it is in the series because of its allatrope (graphite). Carbon can displace anything in the reactivity that is lower than aluminium.
What are some of the characteristics of metals?
usually solid at room temperature except for mercury. usually shiny in the inside.
malleable (shapeable) and ductile (can be wires)
conducts electricity
high density (heavy) and conducts heat
sonorous (resonates sound, ex a gong)
they usually oxides which means that they react with oxygen for example silver.
Why is gold easier to find than potassium? Even though gold is lower on the scale?
Gold is easier to find because potassium is more reactive which means that it reacts quicker with other elements. While gold doesn't react as easily.
