What is convection?
The transfer of heat by air currents. Its the second most common way patients loose heat in the OR.
What is radiation?
The transfer of heat in electromagnetic waves. Its the number one way patients loose heat in the OR.
What is conduction?
The transfer of heat directly from one moluecule to another. A patient loosing heat to the cold OR table.
What is a BTU (British thermal unit)?
The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 lb of water 1 degree F.
What is a kilocalorie?
1000 calories, it is used when measuring the heat energy of the body and for nutritional values of food.

What is a Joule?
A unit used to compare work in various energy systems.
J = 1/4.18 cal 1 cal = 4.18 J |
What is a calorie?
The amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of 1gram of water by one degree celcius.
What is Force (F)?
Force (F) = mass (m) x acceleration (a)
What is a Newton?
It is the force required to move a 1 kg mass (m/s)
What is a dyne?
The force required to move a 1gram mass (1cm/s)
What is the law of conservation of matter?
It states that during a chemical reaction matter is neither created nor destroyed.
What is the Law of conservation of energy?
It states that energy is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction.
Differentiate between exothermic and endothermic.
Exothermic is heat produced
Endothermic is heat absorbed (heat must be added) |
What is heat of vaporization?
The number of calories required to change 1 gram of liquid to a gas at the boiling point.
What is a boiling point?
The temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas.
What is heat of fusion?
The number of calories required to change 1gram of solid to liquid at the melting point.
What are the freezing and boiling point in celsius?
Freezing = 0 degrees C
Boiling = 100 degrees C |
What are the freezing and boiling points in fahrenheit?
Freezing = 32 degrees F
Boiling = 212 degree F |
Which gases are heavier than air?
Nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide
Which gases are lighter than air?
Nitrogen, helium, and water vapor
Is oxygen heavier or lighter than air?
Slightly heavier than air (spec gravity 1.1)
What is mass?
mass = density x volume
What is volume?
Volume = mass/density
What is density?
Density = mass/volume
density = grams per cc or grams per L * it always has 2 units (ie 1.0 g/ml) |
How do you convert Kelvin to celsius and the reverse?
K = C + 273
C = K - 273 |
