When does a precipitate reaction occur? |
When two aqueous solutions combine to form an insoluble ionic solid called a precipitate |
What are precipitates? |
insoluble ionic solid products of a reaction. |
What happens in a double replacement reaction? |
Two ionic reactants dissociate and bond with the other reactant. (they lose their partner and swap with the other reactant). |
What is a decomposition reaction? |
A compound splits into two or more, these can either be elements or similar compounds. (always one substance on the left hand side of a decomposition reaction).
What do binary compounds break down into? (eg. MgCl2) |
They break down into their own elements so Mg and Cl |
What do carbonates break down into? (eg. CaCO3) |
They will break down to the oxide and carbon dioxide, so CaO and CO2 |
What happens when a base or an acid decomposes? (eg. NaOH) |
It breaks down into the oxide of the metal or the non-metal and water, so therefore NA2O and H2O. |
What is the one condition for a displacement reaction to take place? |
The element can only be replaced if the element taking its place is more reactive. |
