What is an element?
an element is a substance made from only one type of atom.
What is a substance?
A substance is made from two or more elements which are chemically bonded together.

They cannot be seperated easily.
What is a mixture?
A substance made from two or more elements which are not bonded together.

They can be seperated easily.
What is an ion?
An ion is a particle that is either positively or negatively charged.
metal + non metal = ?
ionic bond
non metal + non metal = ?
covalent bond
metal + metal = ?
metallic bonding
What is relative atomic mass?
The mass of an atom of an element relative to the mass of the mass of a 12C atom.
What is relative molecular mass?
The mass of a compound/molecule of an element relative to the mass of a 12C atom.
What is an icotope?
An atom of an element with a different number of neutrons.
The number of protons stay the same.
What does relative molecular mass mean?
The sum of all of the relative atomic masses in a molecule.

The BIGGEST number is ALWAYS the atomic mass.
What is paper chromatography?
A method of the seperation of mixtures of the different coloured compounds.
How do you work out RF?
distance moved by the compound
--------------------------------------------------
distance moved by a solvant
What is the solvant front?
The line at which the solvant reaches.
What is the difference between paper and gas chromatography?
Paper chromatography uses coloured compounds and is done with liquids where as gas chromatography uses gas.

Gas chromaography is more accurate.
How do you work out percentage composition?
Ar of the element
------------------------------- x100
Mr of the compound
how do you work out percentage Yield?
actual yield
---------------------------------------- x 100
maximum theoretical yield
What is a Yield?
The yield of a substance is how much there is of it after a chemical reaction.
