A group of atoms held together with covalent bonds ?
What is work ?
A force exerted over a distance.
What is a compound ?
A substance made from two or more elements chemically combined.
What is a Homogeneous Mixture ?
A mixture made up of particles that are uniformly distributed.
What is a Heterogeneous mixture ?
Two or more substances physically mixed togther without uniform distribution of particles.
What is a Binary compound ?
A compound made up of two, and only two elements.
What is a Homogeneous Mixture ?
Two or more substances physically mixed together, with uniform distribution of particles. Also calles a solution.
What is a Diatomic element ?
An elemnt that is found in two-atom molecules in its elemental form.
What is a Monatomic element ?
An element that exists in a single atom form.
What is a Nucleus ?
The center of an atom composed of one or more neutrons and one or more protons.
What is a Ternary compound ?
A compound containing three or more elements.
What is a Covalent bond ?
A bond that results from electrons being shared between two atoms.
What is Fusion ?
Thr process by which a solid becomes a liquid.
What is Solidification ?
The process by which a liquid becomes a solid.
What is Sublimation ?
The process by which a solid changes to the gas phase directly, without passing through the liquid phase.
What is Deposition ?
The process by which a vapor becomes a sold.
What is Vaporization ?
The process by which a liquid becomes a vapor.
What is Condensation ?
The process by which a vapor becomes a liquid.
What is Malleability ?
A physical property of many metals, describing the ability to be hammered into thin sheets.
What is an Intensive property ?
A property of a substance that is not dependent upon the size of the sample, such as density and color.
What is an Extensive property ?
A property of a substace that depends upon the size of the sample, such as mass and volume.
What is a Physical change ?
A change that does not result in the production of a new substance.
What is a Chemical change ?
A Change that results in the production of a new substance.
What is Kinetic energy ?
The energy that an object has due to its motion.
What are exothermic reactions ?
Reactions that realese energy, usually in the form of heat and light.
What are endothermic reactions ?
Reactions that take in energy from their surroundings.
What is a Physical property ?
A characteristic of a substance as it exists. Observable attributes such as size, shape, color, density and mass.
What is a Chemical property ?
A property of a substance that pertains to how it reacts chemically.
What is activation energy ?
The energy required to get a reaction started.
What is chemical energy ?
The energy stored within a substance, due to its bonding states.
What is an atomic number ?
A number equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
What is atomic mass ?
A weighted average of the masses of the naturally occuring isotopes of an element.
What are Isotopes ?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different mass numbers.
