Solid

Has a definite shape and a definite volume because of a fixed, closely packed arrangement of particles that stay in about the same position but vibrate (like running in place).

Liquid

Has a definite volume but no shape of its own with particles that are packed closely and move around freely (like moving marbles in your hand). Also known as a fluid.

Surface tension

The result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules on the surface closer together.

Viscosity

A liquid's resistance to flowing.

Gas

Has neither definite shape nor definite volume. A fluid that can change volume very easily with particles that can spread out and fill all the space available.
