What is fractional distillation? |
A method of separating crude oil |
|
Why can crude oil be separated? |
Because it is a mixture of alkanes and they can be separated because they have different boiling points |
|
How is crude oil separated by fractional distillation? |
-initially temp is higher than boiling points of the biggest chains -as you move up column, chains reach a temp which is below their boiling point and condense -molecules with large chains and high boiling points have greater intermolecular forces so have a high boiling point and condense at the bottom |
