Government

The Sumerians believed that their king was chosen by the gods to rule over their place. The Sumerian kings enforced laws and collected taxes. All civilizations have a system of government to direct the people’s behavior and make life orderly.

Social Structure

At the top of the social structure is the rich people like the king and all the other people. In the middle was farmers and artists. And at the very bottom was the slaves.

Writing

The Sumerians created a written language called cuneiform's. The Sumerians used as many as 2,000 symbols to stand for ideas and sounds.

Art

Arts included creative forms of expression such as painting, architecture, and music. There were many kinds of artists and craftspeople in Sumer. They made decorative items, such as mirrors and jewelry.

Religion

In Sumer, religious beliefs influenced every part of daily life. Sumerians expressed their religious beliefs by building temples and religious towers called ziggurats.

Technology

Before the wheel, people had to drag their goods on flat-bottomed carts called sledges. They had also created the arch. Arches added strength and beauty to the Sumerian buildings. Sumerian arches were inverted ( upside down) U or V shaped structures built above doorways.

Stable Food Supply

The sumerians had a complex irrigation system. Identifying that they built networks of canals, dams, and reservoirs. Their second invention was the plow. It was a tool for tilling the soil to prepare it for planting. This clay tablet shows the amount of grain each family received.
