  • Back
Anastomosis (3 cards)
Surgical connection between blood vessels OR joining of one hollow/tubular organ to another.
Angiocardiography
Process of recording the heart and vessels after an intravenous injection of a radiopaque contrast medium
Angioplasty
Surgical repair of a blood vessel(s) or a nonsurgical technique for treating diseased arteries by temporarily inflating a tiny balloon inside an artery
Artificial pacemaker
Electronic device that stimulates impulse initiation within the heart. Small battery-operated device that helps heart beat in regular rhythm. Some are permanent (internal), some temporary (external). They replace a defective natural pacemaker or blocked pathway.
Auscultation (3 cards)
Method of physical assessment using a stethoscope to listen to sounds within chest, abdomen or other body parts.
Automated external defibrillator
Portable automatic device used applied outside the body to restore normal heart rhythm to patients in cardiac arrest
Cardiac Catheterization
Test used to diagnose heart disorders. Tiny catheter inserted into artery in arm or leg and fed through artery into heart. Dye then pumped through catheter, enabling physician to locate by x-ray any blockages in arteries supplying the heart.
Cardiometer
Instrument used to measure the action of the heart
Cardiotonic
Pertaining to increasing the tone of the heart; type of medication
Cardioversion
Procedure used to treat different types of disruptions in the normal heart rhythm (cardiac arrhythmias); an electrical shock is delivered to the heart to restore its rhythm to a normal pattern
Corornary Bypass
Surgical procedure to increase blood flow to myocardium by using section of saphenous vein or internal mammary artery to bypas obstructed or occluded coronary artery.
Defibrillator
Machine that helps restore a normal heart rhythm by delivering an electric shock; also called a cardioverter
Echocardiography (ECHO)
Noninvasive ultrasound method that evaluates heart for valvular structural defects and coronary artery disease.
Electrocardiograph
Device used for recording the electrical impulses of the heart muscle
Electrocardiophonograh
Device used to record heart sounds
Endarterectomy
Surgical excision of the inner portion of an artery
Extracorporeal Circulation (ECC)
Circulation of blood outside of body via a heart-lung machine or hemodialyzer.
Heart -lung transplant
Surgical process of transferring heart and lungs from donor to patient.
Heart transplant
Surgical process of transferring heart from donor to patient.
Oximetry
Process of measuring oxygen saturation of blood. Photoelectric device (Oximeter0 measures oxygen saturation of blood by recording amount of light transmitted or reflected by deoxygenated vs oxgenated hemoglobin. Pulse oximetry - noninvasive method of indicating arterial oxygen saturation of functional hemoglobin.
Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)
Use of balloon-tipped catheter to compress fatty plaques against artery wall. If successful, plaques remain compressed, permitting more bloodflow through artery thus relieving symptoms of heart disease.
Pericardiocentesis
Surgical puncture of pericardium to remove fluid from pericardial sac for therapeutic or daignostic purposes.
Phlebotomy
Incision of a vein with a needle to withdraw blood for analysis
Sphygmomanometer
Instrument used to measure the arterial blood pressure
Stent
Device made of expandable, metal mesh placed (by using a balloon catheter) at the site of a narrowing artery, then expanded and left in place to keep the artery open
Stethoscope
Instrument used to listen to the sounds of the heart, lungs, and other internal organs
Valvuloplasty
Surgical repair of a valve, especially of a cardiac valve
Vasodilator
Nerve or agent that causes dilation of blood vessels
Venipuncture
To pierce a vein with a needle for the removal of blood for analysis
