John Adams sent a three person mission to France. Agents of the French government demanded that the US pay a bribe of 250,000 dollars. This caused a war fever and many federalists declared war but Adams didn't want one.

the Republicans denounced the Alien and Sedition acts. They charged that sedition act violated the consititution, especially the first amendment which gurantees freedom of speech

Differences between the rep and fed?

One difference is that the Representatives favored the French while the Federalists favored Britain. Another difference between the Representatives and Federalists is that the Reps were against the National Bank and the Feds favored it. The last of the many differences they had was that the Reps were against the tariff while the Feds favored it.
