Digestion:
Involves the breakdown of larger pieces of food into smaller pieces that can be acted on by the digestive enzymes.
Movement Peristalsis:
Food must be passed along from one organ to the next, normally by contractions of smooth muscle tissue called peristalsis, and indigestible remains must be expelled.
Absorption:
Occurs as subunit molecules produced by chemical digestion (i.e. nutrients) cross the wall of the GI tract and enter the cells lining the tract
Elimination |
: removes molecules that cannot be digested and need to be discharged from the body.
Mouth |
receives food and begins the process of mechanical ad chemical digestion.
Uvula |
A fleshy extension at the back of the soft palate that hangs above the throat.
Salivary Glands |
secrete saliva by way of ducts to the mouth.

2nd layer; broad band of loose connective tissue; contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves; help prevent disease
Muscularis:
3rd layer; 2 layers of smooth muscle; performs peristalsis
Appendix |
a tube-shaped sac attached to and opening into the lower end of the large intestine in humans and some other mammals.
Diverticulosis:
mucosa pushes through other layers and make pouches
