Inequalities

(notations: <, >, ≤, ≥)

x < 4 : 'x is less than 4'

y > 4 : 'y is greater than 4'

z ≤ 4 : 'z is less than or equal to 4'

t ≥ 4 : 't is greater than or equal to 4'

What happens when solving an inequality with positive numbers?

We use the same procedure as used for solving equations.

What happens when solving an inequality by multiplying or dividing with negative numbers?

When solving inequalities we use the same method as solving equations, except for when we multiply or divide by a negative number. Here the inequality is reversed.

4 > -2 but multiplying by -2 gives -8 < 4

Inequalities

(number line, <, ≤)

non-full dot: greater than or less than
full dot:
greater than/less than or equal to

non-full dot: greater than or less than

full dot:

greater than/less than or equal to

What does it mean when there are more than one inequality sign?

(4/9 < q < 5/9)

In this example: q is greater than 4/9, but less than 5/9.

The Cartesian Plane (graph)

A way to represent inequalities on a graph.

How do you show whether or not the line in the cartesian graph is included in the inequality shown?

A broken line shows that the line is NOT included.

A full line shows that the numbers are included.

Quadratic inequality

A quadratic inequality is just like a quadratic equation, except instead of an equal sign there's an inequality. It is also solved in the same way as a quadratic equation.

Rules of indices?

Definitions:

Ordinary number

A whole number

(2, 78, 7648...)

Definitions:

Index form

A number in the power of x

E.g. 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 3 in the power of 4

The formel for the volume of a cylinder?

Definitions:

Evaluate (the following)

To evaluate is to find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression.

Definitions:

Rewrite (the following)

To rewrite is to write something in a new way but with the same value

E.g. 0,04 = 4%

Definitions:

Simplify

To simplify is to shorten the answer as much as possible.

the nth term

A way to explain a sequence, by using the nth term.

e.g. the numbers 3,5,7,9. They're numbered 1,2,3,4.

The formula is 2n + 1
