Articles of Confederation

1.) The Articles of Confederation provided for a new central government under which states kept most of their power.


2.) Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress had the authority to conduct foreign affairs, maintain armed forces, borrow money, and issue currency


3.) Congress, however, couldn't regulate trade, force citizens to join the army, or impose taxes.


4.) Two achievements under this was Americans won their independence from Britain and and expanded the countries foreign trade. The Confederation also aided with settling and governing the nation's western territories.


5.) Any attempt to change the Articles required the constant all of 13 states.


6.) In order to change a law 9 states had to agree.

Depression

1.) Americans faced this because of the Revolutionary War. They didn't have enough money to pay their war depts.

Shay's Rebellion

1.) Led by Danial Shays.


2.) The people involved with this was farmers.


3.) Farmers were rebelling because they thought it wasn't fair they were getting their land taken away and being thrown in jail just because they couldn't pay their war depts.


4.) They viewed the government as just another form of tyranny.


5.) They went to Massachusetts in search of guns and ammunition.


6.) The rebellion ended because the Militia fired and killed 4 farmers and they stopped.


7.) After this rebellion people realized that the government was to weak to handle the problems.

Virginia Plan

1.) Edmund Randolph wrote this plan.


2.) This plan required two house legislatures, a chief executive, and a court system.


3.) The smaller states didn't like this because it gave them many less delegates so they didn't have as much as a say when laws got changed.

New Jersey Plan

1.) Paterson wrote this plan.


2.) This plan would only have 1 house legislature, with one vote for each state. They could now set taxes and regulate trade. They would have a weak executive with more than one person.

Constitutional Convention

1.) This convention was called together to discuss trade issues.


2.) Shay's Rebellion changed George Washington's mind about not wanted to change the Articles of Confederation.


3.) The 55 delegates included planters, merchants, lawyers, physicians, generals, governors, and a college president.


4.)All 13 states had to agree to make changes to the Articles of Confederation.


5.) To hold a conference, 7 of the 13 states had to be present.

Amend

1.) To improve something.


2.) Thus, his plan was designed to amend the articles.

Three-Fifths Compromise

1.)The Three-Fifths Compromise was having slaves count as Three-Fifths of a person for population purposes.


2.) This was created because they needed a way to count enslaved people as population.


3.) If the slaves were counted towards their population more people could vote coming from their state.


4.) Northern states didn't want them to be counted because slaved people were legally counted as property.

Great Compromise

1.) This was created to resolve their disagreements. They would have a two house legislature, house of representatives, and a senate.


2.) I don't think this is fair because if your state didn't have a big population you wouldn't get as many votes.
