What is Deviant behavior ?

Behavior that violates social norms and standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society



ex. being late to school, wearing jeans to wedding

What is a stigma ?

Term used to describe the labels society uses to devalue members of certain social groups

What does social control mean ?

Refers to the techniques and strategies for preventing deviant human behavior in any society

What is the Milgram Experiment ?

An experiment in which Milgram had a person administer electric shocks to an innocent victim to see whether they would obey and continue to do it when the victim was in "pain" or if they would refuse to.

What were the results of the experiment and what did Milgram conclude ?

2/3 of the people did not refuse to administer the shocks, meaning they listened to the scientists



Milgram concluded that people were taught to be obediant to people like Doctors, Scientists, and those of higher authority and also those in uniforms (the researchers had on lab coats)

What did similar experiments reveal about race?

Gary Schulman recreated the experiment and found that white students were more likely to shock black learners

What is Durkheim's Theory of Deviance ?

The degree of punishment given by the society often determines the level of deviant behavior



Meaning: More consequences = helps define acceptable behavior and contributes to stability

How does Anomie occur ?

When there is less agreement on what proper behavior is, it leads to a state of "normlessness"



This typically happens during a time of revolution or profound economic or social change

What is the labeling theory ?



(Also called the societal-reaction response)

Focuses on why certain people are viewed as deviants and not so much on the deviant acts themselves



Why are the "Roughnecks" seen as deliquents and the "Saints" were not



Focuses on how people react to the acts of deviance- which is what makes them deviant
