The american dream is if you work hard you will reap benefits.
What is social stratification?
SOcial stratification is creating a hierarchy by orderly ranking individuals based on objective criteria. This is usually wealth, power, and prestige.
Social= wealth,power,prestige
Stratification=rank
What are examples of social stratification?
Some societies may use political power to seperate pple by giving party members special priv. unavailable to others. Societies may use wealth-> the more money, the higher status. Also, birth can stratify pple. Certain fam. regarded as nobility hod privileged positions.

What i make. How much I earn. Income is the money received for work or through inverstments.

INcome Distribution
Income is distributed inporportionately. The poorest 20% of the countrys eaners received only 3.4% of the total income. The top 20% received 50%
A lot of pple are living on a poor income. This means that if it continues. the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer.
Wealth Distribution
Generally men have more wealth than wome. Top wealth holders in the US are predominatly married . More wealth is located on the coasts,

Sociologists have several different ways of defining poverty
Transitional Poverty
When you loose a job, temp.
Marginal Poverty
Lacking stability. For ex. if i work as a life guard during the summer. I might experience marginal poverty when the season ends
Residual Poverty
Passing povertym chrionic. Hard to get out of. Passes throughout generation. May pass to children and grandchildren.
Relative Poverty
Comparing poverty based on others around us. For example, i feel poor because I dont get to go shopping every weekend or buy a new car. Im poor compared to others around me at OU. or even if i feel that my phone is a bad phone compared to my friends iphone.
Absolute Poverty
WORST type of poverty.. Lacking means to survive. People who are starving to death.
How does the US gov define poverty?
The gov est. a poverty line in order to determine what services are needed and by whom. If a family income is below that line, assistive services( food,job,health care) are available.If your income is above the line you recieve little or no gov assistance.
WHat is the role of region in poverty?
Cost of living may be different in different places. yet, the poverty line is the same in 48 states.
What is the role of gender in poverty?
Women are more likely to e poor than are men. i.e Women earn 77cents for every dollar that men earn. Poverty is particularly concentrated in female headed households. Many women have low paying jobs that barely support their family's needs. Qomen of color run into even greater barriers
Power
THe ability to carry out your will and impose it on others. In college classrooms the teachers have great power. They select the textbooks, the topics. Students have little power compared to them, students can only pick the classes thaey take or drop them.
Deligated
Given or assigned. The power to educate in college is delegated to faculty by the college. Members of congress have delegated power when they represent the pple who elected them
Power elite
C.Wright Mills suggested that within the US says that this small group holds immense power. The power elite come from 3 distinct but related groups.
What are the three groups that form the power elite?
High ranking political officials, corporate leaders, and military leaders. they all work together and dictate
Who is most likey to vote?
People with high incomes and people who achieved high levels of education are more likely to vote tha their less wealthy, less euacted neighbors. Meaning older,, wealthier, educated ppple are making the decisions for the entire country.
Prestige
Level of esteem associated with our status and social standing. Generally low paying jobs have less prestige because of the stigma attached to such jobs. Not only do low wage workers struggle to pay bills but they also struggle to earn respect in society that stigmatizes their work.
Prestigious jobs
Generally ranked on scale from zero to one hundred. Lawyers and doctors might rank at the top and drug dealers and stret walkers hold the low end
How can prestigious jobs effect in other areas
Expectations and respect. A ceo wouldnt possibly get advise from a bagger. And we dont expect children to grow up to be street cleaners rather rhan doctors.
How does wealth power and prestige aid stratification
Wealth power and prestige are the basis for the stratification system used to characterize the population. THey can be used to analyze the class system of the US.
UNited States has the highest amount of children living in poverty
WHy? Maybe because the distribution of wealth. Capalist society has greater dispairity. Poor women are more likely to have child before marrige.
Upper or Elite Class
Social class that is very small in number and holds significant wealth
They all rep. wealth,power, and prestige.
Paris Hilton
Upper class. She was born into wealth. She used the wealthpower, and prestige of her family name to pursue tv, modeling, and other careers
Upper Middle Class
The social class that consists of high income members of a socuety who are well educated but do not belong to the elite membership o the super wealthy. They make up about 15%of population. Dentist, owner of store,lawyer belong in this group
Middle class
Social class that consists of those who have moderate incomes. They may be lower paid white collar workers like schoolteachers . Thet arent usually involved in manual labor but may be skilled. 34%of the US population. Have at least a high school diploma. WHen you grad from college and get ur first job you are likely ato start out in the middle class. Make 40-80k a year.
Working Class
Social class usually made up of pple with hs diploma and lower levers of education. 30%of US.Blue collar factory workers and white collar clerical workers usually make up this group. Earn a hourly wage instead of a salary. Many nontraditional students are working class adults who want to gain more skills through education. More and more adults are going back to school for additional training and new careers
Lower class
Social class living in poverty. 37mil pple live in poverty in the US.Members of lower class live paycheck to paycheck.
POVERTY
At all ages, blacks have the highest rates of poverty and the rate of poverty for whites is always lower than the national average. More than 2/3 of blacks in the US live near or below the poverty line.
Urban Underclass
Social class living in disadvantaged neighborhoods that are characterized by poverty, famiy distruption, male unemployment, abd lack of individuals in high status occupations. Many workers in disadvantaged neighborhoods are forced to take lower paying positions that go nowhere leaving them with little hope of escapong the neighborhoods that hold them down. THis is a culture within itself.
WIlliam J. WIlson
Stated that these components could trigger a cycle of ndermining social organizations. He notes that the US urban poor are increasingly living in neighborhoods with few opportunities, poor schools, weak social structuresm large amounts of crime, and rampant drugs use. However what majes them truly disadvantages is the lack of vision and role models for any other way of life. These ussues make life significantly more difficult

Neighborhoods and Social Class
Neighborhoods influene behavior. CHildren who grow up in certain disadvantaged neighborhoods are at increased risk for lower birth rates, higher fdrop out rates.
Horizontal Mobility
Refers to moving within the same status category. For example, when a teacher leaes on school to take a position at another school. Horizontal mobility has occured. The teacher is earning thte same amoint but at a dif location.
Vertical Mobility
Involves moving from one social status to another. This type of mobility can be upward of downwatd. Promotion or demotions at work.
Intragenerational mobilility
An individual changes social standing especially within the workforce. Climbing the corporate latter is an example. For instane , if you begin your working career as a unskilled laborer doing construction work and then ten years later own a construction com. you are experiencing intragererational mobility
Intergenerational Mobility
The change that family members make from one social class to the next through generations. If you hope to have a better life then your parents did, then you hope for upward intergenerational mobility.
Structured mobility
When social changes affect large numbers of people. For example, when the economy heads into a recession, workers who have lost their jobs to outsourcing experience downwatd structural mobiliy
Exchange Mobility
Within the US each social class contains a relatively fixed number of people . If you move up someone moves down. Pyramid of capitalist.
Functionalist View
Stratification must be the result of some kind of functional balance. The american dream personified. Reward some pple more than others. Davis &Moore believe that each society has imp possitions that must be filled. THe more imp. possiton, the more we reword those who choose to purse it. Doctors in the US generally make more bcuz everyone needs a doctor.
Problem with theory
Teachers are needed as well. WHo teaches the doctors.
What factors influence social class in the US
F: Intelligence, drive, and personal choice influence it.
C: Parents. IF your parents are wealthy they can afford to invest in you. Gives u a push. INcome and equality does not make sense
S: Relative to our personal belief systems. Micro level.
Entitlement Program.
Welfare used to be entitlement program. You have to meet a lot of crireria. Finate period of time. Encourages poeple to get low pating class jobs. Exploiting class of people.
Is raising minum rage a solution?
No. Problem is labor is cheaper some where else. there can always be someone to take the job as is.
