Body image and it impact on health

Healthy body image = high level of physical and psychological health, easier to cope with daily life, healthier attitudes towards food and exercise.




Negative body image = adopt disordered eating habits, e.g. restrictive diets or emotional eating.

Restrictive dieting

People often go on a diet to lose weight or improve self- esteem, although it can cause more problems if they are unable to stick to it, depression and unhappiness.




Disordered eating is described as an unhealthy eating pattern that includes restrictive dieting, compulsive eating, comfort or emotional eating or skipping meals.




Consequences of restrictive dieting:


-The body may not receive sufficient food or nutrients


-Body goes into 'survival mode' reducing metabolic rate


-Binge occurs


-lowered self esteem


-cycle begins again

Comfort eating

Comfort eating is recognized as a psychological condition or eating disorder. This condition involves eating a large quantity of food within a short period of time usually over two hours, and feeling a sense of loss of control while eating.




-Some people turn to food as a 'buffer' in times of stress.


-these people have lost their innate ability to self regulate their hunger and satiety.


-Some people over eat when excited or stressed, may not stop until they feel overfull or very uncomfortable.


-may feel feelings of guilt and shame and try to hide habits


-fatty and sugary food is often used to cope for some people as it releases dopamine, feel good endorphin.




Consequences of comfort or emotional eating:


-Overweight/obesity leading to osteoarthritis, chronic kidney problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease.
