Physical activity

Bodily movements produced by skeletal muscles they requires energy expenditure.

Physical exercise

Physical activity that is planned, repetitive, & proposal on the sense that is intended to improve or maintain one or more aspects of physical fitness.

Aerobic exercise

High intensity exercise performed for extended periods of time, swimming, cycling, & running.

Anaerobic exercise

High intensity exercise performing for extended periods of time - weight training & springing are examples.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR)

The minimum number of calories the body needs to maintain bodily functions while at rest.

Calorie

A measure of food energy equivalent to the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.

Physical fitness

A set of attributes relating to the ability to perform physical activity that include muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, & healthy body composition.

Cardiorespiratory endurance

The ability of the heart, blood vessels, &lungs to supply oxygen to working muscles during physical activity for prolonged period of times.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS)

Cluster of conditions including high blood pressure high blood sugar, obesity, low HDL, & high triglyceride level they occur together an increase risk of heart disease, stroke, & diabetes

Circadian rhythms

Our bodies are approximately synchronized with the 24hours cycle of night and day by an internal biological clock.

Often interrupted by age.


Adolescence - likely to be "night owls", energized during the evening with cognitive performance improving ad the day wears on.


After 20s - (slightly earlier for women), we shift from being "night owls" to being morning-loving "larks" and feel our energy and performance declining during he day.

Sleep stages
