(T F) The terms love, sex and intimacy basically mean the same thing-a physical, sexual expression of love between couples.
False. Although these terms can apply to the physical and sexual expressions of love between couples, they also reflect the emotional and communicative aspects of a relationship that are essential.
(T F) Androgens are produced only by males.
False. Both males and females produce androgens (sex hormones).
The scrotum functions to:
a. Hold the ovaries
b. Transport semen
c. Hold the testes
d. Protect against STDs
Answer: C, The scrotum holds the testes. Ovaries are the organs in females that produce eggs (ova) and also produce hormones. The epididymis transports sperm to various other glands in the male, where several substances mix to form semen. This product is then transported through the urethra and out the penis during the male's orgasmic response. The best protection against a sexually transmitted disease is to abstain from sex or to have sexual relations with one's STD-free spouse. For others where this may not apply, protective barriers such as male condoms and spermicide may reduce one's risk for acquiring an STD.
How does sexual arousal differ between males and females?
Males respond spontaneously and instantaneously, much like a gas stove. The female response is much more of a gradual process and requires more time and energy, more like an electric stove.
When is a woman's fertile period?
Answer: Women are generally fertile from approximately a day before to a few days after ovulation. Fertility beyond that range is abnormal.
(T F) Owing to religious and cultural influences, many couples throughout the world practice a form of birth control known as withdrawal. Since so many couples practice this technique, it must be effective and recommended.
False. Withdrawal is ceasing intercourse before ejaculation occurs. Although it is free and "natural," it is not easy to practice, unpredictable, may cause worry and frustration, and is not very effective (up to 82 percent) since small amounts of sperm may be emitted with the lubricant released by the Cowper's gland - which generally occurs before ejaculation.
Janice and Joyce are fraternal twins. Which of the following accurately describe how this happened?

1. Fertilization of one egg by two different sperm
2. Fertilization of two eggs by one sperm
3. Fertilization of one egg by one sperm, followed immediately by cell division
4. Fertilization of two eggs by two different sperm
Answer: d. Fraternal twins are created when two eggs are fertilized by two separate sperm. An egg can be fertilized by only one sperm. Once a sperm has penetrated the membrane of the egg, a specialized barrier immediately forms around the egg that prevents another sperm from penetrating. Once a sperm fertilizes an egg, the nuclei of that union join (called conception). The joining of the chromosomes also occurs at this time. Because of this and other factors, it is impossible for the same sperm to fertilize two separate eggs. Immediate cell division creates identical twins.
