What do the terms interspecific and intraspecific mean?

Interspecific - Differences between organisms of different species.

Intraspecific - Differences between organisms of the same species

Why do we use random sampling?

Remove human involvement

How is random sampling achieved?

1) Divide into a grid

2) Generate random numbers

2) Choose at intersection

How do we minimise the effects of chance?

1) Use a large sample size

2) Analyse the data collected

What are the three causes of genetic variation?

Mutation

Meiosis

Fusion of gametes

How can we recognize from a graph whether the variation is genetic or environmental?

Bar graph - Discontinuous (separate Group) variation caused by a single gene

Line graph or histogram - Continuous variation - there is a range - caused many genes and the environment.

What does a standard distribution curve show?

The range of values around the mean

Why do we use standard deviation?

It shows if there's overlap between sets of data.

If there's no overlap then there's a SIGNIFICANT difference between them

What is biodiversity?

Variety of living things

What two bits of info would you need to know to calculate species diversity index?

Total number of organisms in each species and total number of species.

Why do we use species diversity index?

Allows a comparison between different habitats more accurately.

Explain the effects of agriculture on species diversity.

Reduces species diversity because all space is taken up by a single crop so there is less variety of habitat.

Explain the effects of deforestation on species diversity.

Forests forms layers of many different habitats so when removed there's a big loss in the number of habitats and a number of food sources.
