Classifed
Classified:
External appearance.
Site of fracture
Nature of crack or break in bone.
Many fill more than one category.
Fracture (Fx)
1-5
10 types:
1) Closed/simple - no break in skin, completely internal
2) Open/compound - fracture projects through skin & possiblity of hemorrhage or infection.
3) Comminuted - part shattered into many bony fragments.
4) Transvers - break shaft of bone across its longitudinal axis.
5) Greenstick - usually in children whose bones not fully ossified. One side of shaft broken and other is bent (like greenstick).
Fracture (Fx)
6-10
6) Spiral - twisting stresses spread along the length of bone.
7) Colles' fracture - break in distal portion of radius. Usually result of reaching out to cushion a fall.
8) Pott's fx - Occurs at ankle and affecs both fibula & tibia.
9) Compression fx - occur in vertebrae subjected to extreme stresses e.g. falling on one's bottom.
10) Epiphyseal - seen in children. Occurs where matrix is undergoing calcification and chondrocytes (cartilage cells) are dying.
Arthroscope
arthr/o - joint
-scope-instrument for examining.
Instrument used to examine the interior of a joint.
Bone Mineral Density Test (BMD)
Measures bone mass or bone mineral density.
Several different machines:
PERIPHERAL machines measure density in: FINGER, WRIST, KNEECAP, SHIN BONES AND HEEL.
CENTRAL machines measure density in: HIP, SPINE & TOTAL BODY.
Bone Marrow Transplant
Surgical process - transferring bone marrow from donor to patient.
Fixation
Process of holding or fastening in fixed position; making rigid, immobilizing.
Radiograph/radiogram.
Film/record on which x-ray image is produced.
Reduction
Manipulative or surgical procedure used to correct a fracture or hernia.
Splint
Appliance for fixation, support and rest of injured body part.
Traction (Tx)
Process - drawing or pulling on bones OR muscles to relieve displacement and facilitate healing.
