Alexander Hamilton
Who- The first secretary of the treasury and aid to George Washington. Planned to not eliminate the debt but to enlarge it.
When- January1755- July 1804
Significance- Was a prominent figure in the Federalist party and strongly influenced the early government of the United States.
The Founding Fathers
Who- Those who signed the Declaration of Independence and those who attended the Federal conventions.
When- 1776
Significance- They marked the creation and the beginning of the new nation of the United states.
The Virginia Plan
What- A plan made by a delegate from Virginia that suggested that representatives from the states should be determined by the population of the states.
When- Constitutional convention of 1787
Significance- Would cause that some states would not have any representation at some times when the other states dwarf their population
The Great Compromise
What- an agreement between the large states and the small states regarding the issue of representation in government.
When- Constitutional convention of 1787.
Significance- Created a method where the states would have more reasonable representation in thew federal government.
James Madison
Who-Fourth president of the United States and considered one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
When- march 1751- June 1836
Significance-Wrote over a third of the Federalist Papers and was an advocate for the Federalist party.
Sovereignty
What- The quality of having independence and control over a geographic area.
When- United States gained its sovereignty in 1773.
Significance- allowed nations to be independent from one another.
Separation of Powers
What- The method in the United States government to separate the powers of government into separate branches in order to regulate their power.
When- After the Constitutional convention of 1778
Significance- Made it so that no one breanch of government can become all powerful as it is being checked and balanced by the other two branches of government.
Federalists
Who- A political party in the early United States that fought for a strong central Government.
When- Founded in 1792
Significance- Created a strong central government and started the creation of separate factions in the United States government.
Anti Federalists
Who- Te name for those that opposed the formation of strong central government and the Federalist party.
When- 1792
Significance- Marked the beginning of rival factions in the United states.
The Federalist Papers
What- A collection of essays advocating the ratification of the United States Constitution.
When- First published in 1788.
Significance- Still remains the primary source of interpretation of the United States Constitution.
The Bill of Rights
What- A list of ten amendments made to the Constitution which specifically labeled some of the people's rights.
When- Created 1789, ratified in 1791.
Significance- Clearly stated the rights of the people and made it so that the government cannot infringe on those rights.
The Cabinet
What- A group of high ranking government officials which act much like a parliament or an executive counsel.
When- First mention of a "cabinet council" in 1605 in England.
Significance- Created a system where a group of people, not just a single person, helped to make the decisions for a nation.
Bank of the United States 1790
What- The first national bank in the united states that was meant to run on a 20 year charter and help to settle the national debt.
When- Established in 1791
Significance- Marked the beginning of a stable banking system in the United states
Whiskey Rebellion
What- A rebellion sparked in teh frontier areas of the country over the issue of a new tax that was put into place by president George Washington. It quickly dissolved when the president himself led a militia force straight to the heart of the rebellion.
When- 1790's
Significance- Learned from the disaster of the Shay's Rebellion and caused the central government to take control of a state's problems
Citizen Genet
Who- French Ambassador to the United States during the French Revolution.
When- 1763- 1834,French Revolution
Significance- Was denied help when France was in a war with Britain and Spain.
Jay's Treaty
What- A treaty between Britain and the United States that is credited with averting another war with Britain and securing a small commercial relationship.
When- 1794
Significance- Averted a war with the British during the war between France, Spain, and Britain.
Pinckney's Treaty
What- A treaty made with the Spanish that marked the boundaries between the Spanish colonies and the United States that also gave American vessels navigation rights to the Mississippi River.
When- 1795
Significance- Gave the Americans access to the Mississippi River and created a relationship with Spain.
The Quasi War
What- An undeclared naval war between France and the United States.
When- 1798- 1800
Significance- Resulted in the halting of French attacks on American shipping vessels and the recall of claims against France made by the United States.
The XYZ Affair
What- A political affair in France.
