what is The study of interactions between organisms and the environment.
ecology
What are the two major environmental components?
abiotic and biotic
What is the difference between descriptive science and hypothesis driven science?
3. Descriptive science- research involving observation, history
Hypothesis driven science- is experimental ecology, large scale field studies, computer mock ups
Explain the difference between an environmentalist and an ecologist.
1. Environmentalism is advocating for protection or preservation of the natural environment. Ecology provides the information needed, does not answer all the questions posed by environmentalists.
Who was Rachel Carson? Explain the shift in public thinking that she catalyzed.
2. She was one of the first ecologists to apply ecological data to environmental problem. Helped initiate environmental awareness with her book. Warned of global dangers and pesticide use, her efforts led to a ban on DDT. Prior to her efforts, many believed that nature existed only for existence of man.
Describe the factors that limit the distribution of the red kangaroo
1. The presence of appropriate grasses fir their diet limit their distribution. Also local distribution id affected by water sources.
animals with chemical defenses often exhibit bright coloration which serves predators as a warning to predators.
aspomatic coloration
camouflauge
cryptic
a harmlesss species mimics harmful or unpalatable species
batesian
link producers to consumers to predators and they are limited to a few links. Inefficeiency of energy transfer. Populations changes at low levels are amplified in the upper levels. They are not isolate units.
food chains
- cause physical changes to their community. Change may be due to behavior or biomass. Can have positive effects on other species.
foundation species
not necessarily abundant, but have pivotal ecological roles. To identify such a species, remove it and observe the effect.
keystone species
the amount of energy in consumers food that is converted to their own biomass in a defined time period.
secondary production
