What was an Apprentice? What was there life style?
At around 11, many boys left their families to learn a trade from an experienced craftsman. The apprentice recieved food, clothing, lodging and general education. He worked for free, usually for 4 to 7 years. Then he could work for wages or start his own Business.

Girls rarley apprenticed, most learned sewing and other household skills fro there mothers. In New England, 13 or 14 girls often were sent away to learn specialized skills. Orphanes worked as servents.
What is the Great Awakening?
In the 1730s and 40s, a religious movement called the Great Awaking swept the colonies. The ministers of this movement preached that inner emotion was more important than outward religious behavior.

Jonathan Edwards was one of the best preachers who scared the colonists with images of God's anger but said they could be saved.
What is the Enlightenment?
Unlike the Great Awaking, which stressed religous emotion, the Enlightenment emphasized reason and science. The Enlightenment began in Europe, as scientists discovered natural laws gocerning the universe. Enlightenment ideas of natural rights and government by agreement.

Who was John Locke?
A English philosopher who argued that people have natural rights; life,liberty, and property. New governments were formed. If a government failed, people can change it. Locke also challenged the belief that kings had a God-given right to rule.
What was life like for men and women?
African women helped raise crops such as tobacco and indigo. Most white women were farm wives who performed many tasks and made products their families needed.
