What is industrialization?

The process of when a society changes from agricultural and manmade production to machine driven mass production

What were the Factory Acts?

A series of laws passed by the British Parliament during the 1800's about workers rights

What main points did the Factory Acts include?

1. The master or mistress of the factory must observe the law


2. All rooms in a factory must be cleaned twice a year and duly ventilated


3. Every child must be supplied with two complete suits of clothing


4. The hours of work for children must not exceed 12 hours a day, nor commence before 6am, not conclude after 9pm


5. Children are to be instructed every day for the first four years of apprenticeship in reading, writing, and arithmetic

What is a labour union?

A group of people who try to improve the working conditions and wages for a group of workers

What is a welfare state?

A society in which a government plays a large role in providing for the needs and common good of its citizens


I.e. education, healthcare, housing, unemployment/disability insurance

What started the feminist movement?

During the industrial revolution, women's jobs were taken over by factory workers leaving many women with no way to create any income.


I.e. making clothing, sewing, etc.

Who was Emily Stowe?

The first female doctor in Canada, she also founded the Toronto Women's Literacy Guild, which later helped to gain women the right to vote.
