Gold seekers ventured west

During the Colorado gold rush "Pikes Peak or Bust!"

New mining techniques produced ores for industry

new inventions of this age included the dynamo , light bulb, and the telephone.

the word “bonanza” was important

Said by miners when they found a large vein of valuable ore

The Comstock Lode was developed

used by the prospectors to try and find gold

The chances for the individual prospector to find big $$$ were slim

once the loose chunks of gold where removed from the surface large machinery was required to dig into the earth to split the quartz where gold often was



. Western mining did horrible things to the environment
Rock dust from drilling was often dumped into river beds,Poisonous underground gases, mostly containing sulfur, were released into the atmosphere.mercurypolluted local streams and rivers
There was a distinct socio-economic ladder in mining towns
Whites owned and managed all of the mines. Poor whites, Mexicans and Chinese Americans worked the mine shafts.

Congress passed the Homestead Act, 1862
That landmark piece of legislation provided 160 acres free to any family who lived on the land for five years and made improvements.
There were many economic difficulties associated with farm life
overproduction. the food market became so flooded with goods that prices fell sharply.
Farmers lacked political power
With each neighbor on 160-acre plots of land, communication was difficult and loneliness was widespread.
Local Granges sponsored dances
. It was only natural that politics and economics were discussed in these settings, and the Grangers soon realized that their individual problems were common.
States passed Granger Laws, 1874
establishing maximum shipping rates. Grangers also pooled their resources to buy grain elevators of their own so that members could enjoy a break on grain storage.
Farmers wanted an inflationary economic environment

made it easier to pay off their debts

the Greenback Party ran candidates for President in the 1870s and 1880s
. No candidate was able to muster national support for the idea, and soon farmers chose another strategy.
