French and Indian War
A war that was fought between Britain and New France and the natives fought for Britain.
Significance: France lost land due to the war and this changed the balance of power.
Sugar Act
Halved duty on foreign made molasses, placed duties on certain imports.
Significance: It tried to stop other colonies from importing goods into Britain, so British colonists had to buy their goods from Britain. Britain hoped this would stop smugglers by decreasing tax on British goods.
Townshend Act
A series of laws enacted by parliament, established indirect taxes on goods imported from Britain by the British colonies in North America.
Significance: This act made the colonists angry because the Townshend Act put taxes on paint, glass, wood, etc.
Sons of Liberty
Samuel Adams was apart of this and he founded it. They wanted to protect the colonists from the British rule.
Significance: They gave resistance to British rule and held demonstrations when there were acts they did not agree with.
Boston Tea Party
The dumping of 18,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor by colonists to protest the Tea Act.
Significance: It was the first violent act the colonists took against Britain to help gain their independence and pay less taxes.
Lexington and Concord
Lexington- had the "shot heard around the world" and was where the Revolutionary War started.
Concord- The British went to Concord to look for hidden militia(weapons/gun powder) the Americans attacked the British at the north bridge and the British fled.
Second Continental Congress
Held after the battle of Lexington and Concord in Philadelphia. They had to make the decision of what the colonies should do, they made a continental army which was led by George Washington.
Significance: Where the Olive Branch Petition was put into effect to repeal the king.
Declaration of Independence
This explained why the colonies were separating from Britain to become independent.
Significance: It would gain their independence from Great Britain and it would establish their government, currency, and army when they became their own country.
Battle of Bunker Hill
Minute men fought the British troops but ran low on ammo. which caused the loss.
Significance: The British lost more men than the militia did. The Americans lost the battle but they ended up winning the war.
Battle of Saratoga
American troops surround Saratoga and begin to battle.
Significance: The turning point of the war. The Americans won and France recognized the Independence of America. The French would not make peace with Britain until they recognized the Americans as independent.
Battle of Yorktown
The French join forces with two French fleets and attack the British in Yorktown.
Significance: The Americans and the French close in on Cornwallis and Cornwallis surrenders.
Treaty of Paris
Confirmed independence and set boundaries of the new nation.
Significance: It ended the American Revolution and Great Britain finally recognized American independence.
