The most important muscles, or prime movers, for hip flexion are?
The iliopsoas, rectus femoris, sartorius, and tensor fasciae latae.
The iliopsoas is actually made up of three muscles, what are they?
The iliacus, psoas major and psoas minor (absent in abut 40%o of people)
Origin and insertion for the iliacus?
Te iliacus has its origin on the inner surface of the ilium bone of the hip and inserts into the lesser trochanter of the femur.
Origin and insertion of the psoas major and psoas minor?
The psoas major and psoas minor originate on the transverse processes of the five lumbar vertebrae and attach to the femur at the lesser trochanter.
What condition of the lower spine can be a result of inflexibility or hypertropy of the psoas?
Psoas tightness or hypertrophy can result in passive hyperextension of the lumbar spine, a condition known as lordosis.
Tightness in the iliopsoas can also be attributed to:
A lack of stretching exercises and poor standing and sitting postures.
To stretch the iliopsoas, have the individual:
Stand in a forward lunge position with the front knee flexed and the back leg straight with the foot flas on the floor. Instruct them to activate their abdominal muscles to slightly flex the lumbar spine and hold for at least 15 seconds, careful of hyperextention of the lumbar spine.
To strengthen the iliopsoas, the individual can do what?
Perform a resisted knee lift (knee lift with rubber band that wraps from the knee and down around the bottom of the foot.)
Which of the four muscles of the quadricep femoris crosses the hip joint?
The rectus femoris.
What exercise can be done to strengthen the rectus femoris?
The standing straight leg raise, producing an overload in both hip flexion and knee extension.
What exercise can be done to stretch the rectus femoris?
The iliopsoas lunge stretch, then lower the body so that the back knee bends.
What is the origin and insertion for the sartorius ( the longest muscle in the body)
The sartorius muscle originates from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and inserts into the medial tibia, just below the knee.
The primary hip extensors are the ....
Hamstrings and the gluteus maximus.
The hamstrings are made up of what three muscles?
biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and the semimembranosus.
Which muscle is the prime mover for hip extension?
Hamstrings are the prime mover.
During higher intensity activities such as sprinting, stationary cycling or stair climbing where greater hip range of motion and more powerful hip extentions are required, what muscle is the prime mover?
Gluteus maximus is the prime mover.
What are the three gluteal muscles?
Gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and the gluteus maximus.
