Very young children experience strong attraction to parents of the opposite sec and jealous of parent with same sex.

Physcho Sexual Stages

Child passes through stages focusing on bodily areas (mouth anus genitals) and must pass through all stages to be healthy.



Oral stage (birth to 1.5)


Pleasure centered on mouth w/ nursing



Phallic Stage (3-6)


- Pleasure zone is genitals and coping with incestuous feelings (oedipus complex)



Latency (6-12)


After Oedipus they repress sexual feelings


Spend time w/ same sex.

- Earlier conflicts must be resolved for normal adulthood sexual interests and habits.

Defense Mechanisms

Defense against anxiety and psychological conflict. Way of resolving conflict between id and superego in the ego.



Different Kinds of Defense Mechanisms

Fantasy (day dreaming too much) - When u fantasize so much its harmful as u dont deal with realities of life.



Repression - Pushing unwanted thoughts in unconscious mind. (forgetting)



Rationalization - Creating reasons.



Sour Grapes - Cant reach a goal, we tell ourselves wasnt worthwhile at all.



Regression - Problems to overwhelming to be handled maturely, go back to old habits.



Denial - If reality is too unpleasant we deny its existence.



Projection - Attributing your feelings to other people. Instead of dealing with own feeling we claim theyre someone elses.



Reaction Formation - Replacing feelings we believe are wrong according to morals into opposite feelings.



Displacement - Direct aggression against actual cause may not be socially acceptable, take out our desire to b aggressive on innocent person or thing.

Coined by Carl Jung, we are motivated by opposite tendencies. Mom dad, male female, happy sad.

Personality type that thrives in social atmospheres + handles/sovles conflicts through conversation and many views.

Personality type which tends to look at bad side. Cons over pros.

Collective Unconscious

Carl Jung



Unconscious mind contains both personal and common cultural experiences.

Psychoanalysis

A process where patients discuss background, feelings and experiences with a trained psychologists.



Way to tap in unconcious mind and inner motives.



Includes: Free assocaition, dream analysis.



If one acknowledges hidden conflict the struggle is cured and they lose symptoms.


Birth Order

The order which you are born in.(middle child, youngest, oldest). Effects later life.

Maslows Hierarchy of Needs

Arranged humans needs in order.



Order; Physiological (basic needs), safety, Belonging and love, esteem, cognitive needs (understand end explore), aesthetic needs, self actualization(live up to full potential), transcendence (helping others to self actualize).

Pluthicks Model of Emotions

A model that assumes there are eight primary emotions which are in the inside and on the outside are examples of blended emotions. ex. Dissapointment (outside) and surprise and sadness inside.

Components of Emotion

Cognitive component- Concious feeling of being happy, sad, angry or excited.



Physical Component- Physcial characteristics that accompany emptional reactions. ex. tensed muscles, hear beat



Behavioural Component - Expressing emotion through actions ex. body lang, facial expression.

Heredity - Tendency towards particular behav may be inheirited.



Learning - Largely determined by learning experiences. What we see provides models to act.



Maturity - Emotional feelings develop over time.

- Sepnt mroe time w/ cloth mom


- Feed from Wire and run back to snuggle with cloth



- Monsters into cage


- Cloth monkeys would cling and then fight

Romantic Lovers: Emphasize looks. Beleive in love at first sight.



Game-playing Lovers - Enjoy the chase more than the catch.



Compassionate lovers - Take longer to develop relationship.



Possesive Lovers - Very emotional. Often suffer from jealousy and worry.



Pragmatic Lovers - Want practical relationship based on mutual satisfaction.
