Inflammation caused by infection of the brain and its structures.(equine, arbovirus, rubella or mumps) are the most common cause.
Presentation of Encephalitis
Similar to meningitis
S/S include- decrease LOC, fever, headache, drowsiness, coma, tremors, stiff neck. Seizures can occur but are more common in infants
Rabies
Transmitted by the rabies virus contracted by unimmunized animals or wild animals. Infection occur through saliva, opening in the skin. Transimission is determined by the severity of the wound
Incubation period of rabies is
about 3-8 weeks but in rare cases 9 days
S/S of rabies
Malaise,headache,fever,chills, sore throat,n/v, confusion,hallucenations, combativness, bizarre thoughts, seizures, focal paralysis
Tx for rabies
wash wound with soap and water
debride and irragate wound and allow to drain
tetanus shot and antibiotics
Tetanus
Acute bacterial infectionof the CNS from a puncture wound
Tetanus S/S
Rigidity of muscles, pain and stiffness in the jaw muscle (lock jaw), rigidity of the body, respiratory arrest
Tetanus Tx
Immunization every 10 yrs
Lyme Disease
A recurrent inflammatory disorder accompanied by skin lesions, polyartritis, and nervous system of the heart caused by a tick borne spirchete. more common in the northeast and upper midwest. (icubation ranges from 3-21 days)
Lyme Disease Stages
1. Early localized stage: painless flat red lesion at the bite site.
2. Early dissemated stage: Spreads to skin, nervous system, heart and joints
3. Late Stage : Occurs months or years later, encephalopathy with cognitive deficits, depression and sleep disorders.

Women there is no pain noted and minimal discharge, urinary frequency,fever,vaginal discharge, abd pain, PID

A disease caused by spirochete, transmitted by direct contact with exudates from other syphilitic lesions of the skin and mucous membranes, semen ,blood, saliva,and vaginal discharge.

30% of exposures result in infection

Genital Warts
A DNA virus caused by the HPV virus, Known to cause genital warts and are associated with cervicle cancer.
Gential warts presentation
Males: appears as cauliflower like, fleshy growths on penis, anus and anal canal

Females: growths appear on the labial sufaces
Herpes Simplex 2
cause 70-90% of all genital herpes
Herpes Simplex 2 presentation
Males: vesicular lesions on the penis, anus, rectum,and mouth of the male

Females: Sometimes Asymptomatic but can display lesions of the vagina, vuvlva, perineum,rectum, mouth,cervix, may have fever associated

Trasmitted by sexual activity, hand to hand transfer of eye secretions causing conjunctivitis. Females get retrograde infections of the reproductive tract causing PID

responds to a variaty of antimicrobials,
Trichomoniasis
Is a protozoan parasite and is the common cause of vaginitis
Trichomoniasis presentation
Women: greenish- yellow discharge, irratation of the perineum and thighs

Men: generally asymptomatic, if present symptoms include dysuria, urethral discharge
Trichmoniasis Tx:

highley contagious ulcer, uncircumsiced men a re at higher risk, spread by direct contact mostley sexual
Chancroid S/S
Painful, inflamed pustole or ulcer on the penis, anus, urethra or vulva. Can spread to breast, fingers and thighs, fevers may be present

If present in children suspect abuse.
Chancroid Tx:
Antimicrobials
