What is an animal?

A multicellular, heterotrophic eukaryote with tissues that develop from embryonic layers.

What are the 6 unique characteristics of animals?

1. They are multicellular.

2. They are heterotrophic- they eat other things.

3. They ingest food.

4. They lack cell walls.

5. Their cells are organized into tissues.

6. They reproduce- mostly sexually.

Why are animals heterotrophic?

They cannot construct all of their own organic molecules, so they ingest them and use enzymes within their bodies to digest them.

What are the two, unique types of tissues central to the animal lifestyle?

Nervous and muscle

Which stage of life dominates animal life cycle?

Diploid

Define zygote.

A fertilized egg

What is cleavage?

A series of rapid cell divisions of a zygote into a blastula of the same size; a succession of mitotic cell divisions without cell growth between the divisions.

What forms as a result of cleavage? Define it.

A blastula; a hollow ball of cells; the multicellular stage of embryonic development.

What is the hollow inside of a blastula?

The blastocoel

coel- pronounced "seal"

What does coel ("seal") mean?

Cavity

What is the developmental stage that follows the blastula? What happens?

Gastrulation; invagination.

What does invagination mean?

To turn in

What happens during gastrulation?

The layers of embryonic tissues that will develop into adult body parts are produced.

What is the result of gastrulation? Define it.

A gastrula- a two-layered embryo formed by the invagination of a blastula.

What is an archenteron?

The pouch formed in gastrulation.
