Constant of Proportionality

If a quantity x is proportional directly to another quantity y, this x is written as x=KY

Constant of variation

the number that relates two variables that are directly proportional or inversely proportional to one another.

constant rate of change

The (constant) rate of change with respect to the variable x of a linear function y = f(x) is the slope of its graph. If x and f have units inDefinition 2, then the units of the rate of change are those of f divided by those of x.

Direct variation

A relationship between two variables in which one is a constant multiple of the other. In particular, when one variable changes the other changes in proportion to the first. If b is directly proportional to a, the equation is of the form b = ka (where k is a constant).

Linear relationships

a statistical term used to describe the relationship between a variable and a constant

Point-slop form

the equation of a straight line in the form y − y1 = m(x − x1) where m is the slope of the line and (x1, y1) are the coordinates of a given pointon the line

Rise

move from a lower to a higher position, move upward; increase in number or amount

Run

How far a line goes.

Slope

slant mean to incline away from a relatively straight surface or line used as a reference.

Slope-intercept form

The slope-intercept form is simply the way of writing the equation of a line so that the slope (steepness) and y-intercept (where the line crosses the vertical y-axis) are immediately apparent

Standard form

written down in the way most commonly accepted" It depends on the subject

Substitution

The substitution method is used to eliminate one of the variables by replacement when solving a system of equations

Systems of equations

A "system" of equations is a set or collection ofequations that you deal with all together at once. Linearequations (ones that graph as straight lines) are simpler than non-linear equations, and the simplest linear system is one with two equations and two variables.

x-intercept

the x-coordinate of a point where a line, curve, or surface intersects the x-axis.

Y-intercept

In the equation of a straight line (when the equation is written as "y = mx + b"), the slope is the number "m" that is multiplied on the x, and "b" is the y-intercept, where the line crosses the y-axis
