Bay Of Pigs

A plan by the CIA under Eisenhower back in the 50s that planned an invasion on Cuba when Cuba turned Communist. But when JFK entered office, we went back with this invasion. The invasion backfired and most of the troops died. JFK soon took full responsibility.

Cuban Missile Crisis

It began when Cuba turned Communist and Americans soon found out they had Russian missiles there. What followed was a standstill between the US and Russia. It ended with both sides reaching a compromise: US would remove their missiles from Turkey and Italy if Russia removed their missiles from Cuba.

Cold War Strategies Of Truman, Eisenhower, and JFK.

Truman tried to fight the Cold War with "Containment", or keeping Communism in its borders. Eisenhower fought the Cold War with "Massive Retaliation" and "Mutually Assured Destruction". JFK used "Flexible Response" during the Cold War.

Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was built to divide Eastern and Western Berlin so that the West could lose supplies and eventually turn Communist. The US responded with Airdrops to Eastern Eastern Berlin

JFK's failed attempt to resurrect the Good Neighbor policy with Latin America.

JFK's program that sent American volunteers to countries around the world that were in need of assistance.

Vietnam War Draft Lottery

It was a tool used during the Vietnam War that helped draft soldiers into the Vietnam War. It's relevant today because it could still be used at any moment.

Domino Theory

The theory that if Vietnam turned Communist, its neighboring countries would also turn to Communism.

Ho Chi Minh

An important figure in getting Vietnam their independence and eventually strived to unite all of Vietnam under Communism.

Ngo Din Diem

The struggling leader of South Vietnam who faced criticism for being Catholic rather than being Buddhist.

Reasons for North and South being divided.

They were divided as a result of France's surrender in the Geneva Accords. The Communists had the North, and the anticommunist held the South.

Gulf of Tonkin Incident

As the USS Maddox patrolled the Gulf of Tonkin near North Vietnam, the North Vietnamese fired a torpedo at them. they missed, but the US took it as a sign of war. As such, the Congress gave the US the Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution, which gave the President the Power to declare war.

Similarities and Differences between Vietnam and Korean Wars.

Similarities: Both wars had a communist North opposing the capitalist South (which had assistance from the US) and during the war, both sides reached a standstill which "ended" the war.




Differences: Vietnam was united under Communism, while Korea is still split.

Fighting Styles in Vietnam War

The US dropped Napalm, which was a jellied gasoline that acted as an explosive. Agent Orange was a gas used to kill plants that the Americans used against the Vietnamese. The US used these in rapid airstrikes against the enemy.

Nixon and "Vietnamization"

When Nixon won the election, he called for "Vietnamization", which meant that he would call back US forces in exchange for ARVN troops.

Media and Vietnam War

As the Vietnam War progressed, the US citizens began to oppose the war more and more, and soon a "credibility gap", or distrust in government statements, began to increase. The Pentagon Papers showed what we were actually doing, increasing the unpopularity and credibility gap.

Vietnam War and Cambodia

As the North Vietnamese tried to move into Cambodia, we also moved the fighting there, upsetting both the North and Cambodia.

My Lai Massacre

The US-arranged massacre of the village of My Lai. This upset a lot of people as only one person was convicted. This event would contribute to Nixon pulling troops from Vietnam.

Kent State Incident

At Kent State University, Guardsman opened fire on the protesters there, killing several of them. This resulted in more protests across the nation.

Results of Vietnam War

The Paris Peace Accords agreed that the US would pull its troops from Vietnam and would exchange POWs with the enemy as a cease fire was called for. When the US left, the North Vietnamese took over the South, uniting Vietnam under communism. The Veterans were given mixed reactions as they returned. In Cambodia, their leader began a ruthless genocide. The Domino Theory occurred as Cambodia and Laos fell to Communism.
