  • Back
bark
All tissues external to vascular cambium.
bud
Undeveloped shoot, mainly meristematic tissue. Small, protective scales often cover it.
collenchyma
A simple plant tissue that imparts flexible support during primary growth, as in lengthening stems.
cork
Periderm component; insulates, protects, and waterproofs woody stems and roots.
cork cambium
Lateral meristem that replaces epidermis with cork on woody plant parts.
cortex
A rindlike layer. In vascular plants, a ground tissue; supports parts and stores food.
cuticle
Body cover. Of plants, a transparent covering of waxes and cutin on outer epidermal cell walls. Of annelids, a thin, flexible coat. Of arthropods, a lightweight exoskeleton hardened with protein and chitin.
dermal tissue system
Tissues that cover and protect all exposed surfaces of a plant.
dicot
[Gk. di, two, + kotyledon, cup-shaped vessel] Dicotyledon. Flowering plant generally characterized by embryos with two cotyledons; net-veined leaves; and floral parts arranged in fours, fives, or multiples of these.
epidermis
Outermost tissue layer of plants and all animals above sponge level of organization.
fibrous root system
All lateral branchings of adventitious roots arising from a young stem.
ground tissue system
Tissues, parenchyma especially, making up most of the plant body.
growth ring
One of the alternating bands of early and late wood; a tree ring.
hardwood
Type of strong, dense wood with many vessels, tracheids, and fibers in xylem.
heartwood
A dry tissue at the core of aging stems and roots that no longer transports water and solutes. It helps the tree defy gravity and is a dumping ground for some metabolic wastes.
lateral root
Outward branching from the first (primary) root of a taproot system.
leaf
Chlorophyll-rich plant part adapted for sunlight interception and photosynthesis.
meristem
A localized region of a plant where undifferentiated cells give rise to cell lineages that form all of the mature tissues.
