what is the job of a cell membrane?
-surrounds and protects the cell

-regulates what passes into and out of the cell
what is the job of a nucleus?
-controls the operation of the cell

-directs cell division

-determines the structure and function of the cell
where are chromosomes found and how many pairs of chromosomes are there?
-are rod like structures found within the nucleus

-all human body cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes

(except for sex cells, the egg and sperm. each egg and sperm has only 23 unpaired chromosomes. after the egg and sperm unite to form the embryo, each cell of the embryo then has 23 paired chromosomes.)
where are genes found?
-contained in the chromosomes

(there are several thousands of them in an orderly sequence)
what is a DNA and where is it found?
-a chemical composed in each gene

(regulates the activities of the cell by its arrangement into the gene on each chromosome. the sequence resembles a series of recipes in code. the code, when passed out of the nucleus to the rest of the cell, directs the activities of the cell, such as cell division and synthesis of protein.)
what is are ribosomes and what is its job?
-major parts of a cell

-are small granules that help the cell make proteins
what is a cytoplasm and what does it contain?
-material outside the nucleus and enclosed by the cell membrane

-it carries on the work of the cell (eg. in a muscle cell, it does the contracting; in a nerve cell it transmits impulses)

-contains: mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum
