Seafloor Spreading
-oceanic crust being created by two continental crusts pulling away from each other.
ex. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge
Types of Boundaries
Divergent- plates move apart and new lithosphere is created (plate area inc)
Convergent- plates come together and one is recycled back into the mantle (plate area dec)
Transform fault- plates slide horizontally past each other
Examples of Boundaries
Divergent- mid atlantic ridge, great rift valley
Convergent- himalayans, Andes, marianas
Transform fault- San Andreas
Figure 2.10
Magnetic mapping can measure the rate of seafloor spreading
What is the engine that drives plate tectonics?
The Mantle Convection and the energy that comes from Earth's internal heat.
island arc
volcanic islands
volcanic arc
volcanic areas on continents
What drives the rock cycle?
Internal Heat
Minerals
Calcite- reacts with acid
Quartz
Gypsum
Halite
Subduction
oceanic creation is destroyed bc it subducts under the the continental crust creating new continental crust.
Types of waves
P waves- first, primary
S waves
Can see refraction/reflection in waves
What features do you look for movement of plate tectonics?
Volcanoes, mountains, trenches, faults
