Functions of plasma membrane
1. Provides a protective barrier against substances and forces outside the cell

2. Some of the membrane proteins act as receptors
- Bind to specific molecules arriving from outside the cell
- After binding, molecule can induce a change in the cellular activity

3. Controls which substances can enter and leave the cell. The membrane is a selectively permeable barrier
Simple diffusion
- Small, uncharged molecules and fat-soluble molecules can pass freely through the lipid bilayer
- Osmosis: diffusion of water molecules
Facilitated diffusion
- Moving down their concentration gradient
- Moving through a specific integral protein
Active transport
- AGAINST concentration gradient using energy
