The earth system
Earth System Science- science that studies the whole earth as a system of many interactive parts and focuses on the changes within and between those parts.
Parts include: Atmosphere- mixture of gases Hydrosphere- earths water Biosphere- organisms Geosphere- earths rock and regolith |
Scientific method
The Scientific Method
Scientific Method- Use of evidence that can be seen and tested by anyone with resources who cares to do so -Observation -Hypothesis -Testing of hypothesis -Formation of a Law -Continual re-examination |
system
any portion of the universe that can be isolated from the rest of the universe for the purpose of observing and measuring changes
isolated
prevents the system from exchanging wither matter or energy with its surroundings- imaginary system- impossible for any boundary to be perfectly insulated.
closed system
permits the exchange of energy, but not matter. – I.E space shuttle which allows the material inside to be heated and cooled, but is designed to minimize the loss of any material
open system
can exchange both energy and matter across its boundary. I.E and Island on which rain is falling. Some of the water runs off via streams, or seeps downward to become groundwater; some is absorbed by plants or evaporated back to the atmosphere.
satellite remote sensing
one of the best-known scientific tools, possibility of observations at large scales. I.E ozone hole over Antarctica.
GIS
computer based software programs, which allow a large number of data points to be stored along with their locations. This is where all remote sensing data is stored and analyzed.
closed system
Two important implications: |
-Earths resources are limited and finite
“There is no away, to throw things to” -If changes are made in a part of a closed system, the results of those changes will eventually affect other parts of the system. I.E- Volcano eruption in Indonesia could throw so much dust into the atmosphere that it could generate a climatic change leading to floods in South America, and droughts in California |
box models
Storage and movement of materials and energy in a group of interacting systems are depicted in the form of box models.
