RECONSTRUCTION
The 12 year period following the Civil War when America struggled to rebuild the South.
AMNESTY
Official forgiveness of crimes.
RADICAL REPUBLICANS
Followers of radical ideas or extreme ideas such as using Federal power to force major changes in the South and protect the rights of African Americans.
POCKET VETO
The President's power to kill a bill by not signing it for 10 days while Congress is not in session.
THIRTEENTH AMENDMENT
The amendment to abolish slavery in the US.
BLACK CODES
Restrictive laws that applied only to African Americans. These laws were established by Southern legislatures with the idea to reestablish white control.
FOURTEENTH AMENDMENT
This defined citizenship to include African Americans and required that no state deny equal protection of the laws.
IMPEACH
To charge the President with misconduct.
TENANT FARMERS
Farmers who farmed land that they rented.
SHARECROPPERS
Persons who worked the owners' lands and received a share of the crops in return.
KU KLUX KLAN (KKK)
Terrorist bands who formed to protect the South's old way of life often at the cost of African Americans. Also called Regulators or the Knights of the White Camelia.
FIFTEENTH AMENDMENT
The right to vote for all American males over the age of 21, regardless of race.
SCALAWAGS
These people were thought to be disloyal to the South. They were Southern, former Whig party members who were interested in the economic development of the South and joined with the Republicans.
CARPETBAGGERS
Northerners who moved to the South after the war to look for business opportunities.
FILIBUSTER
A long speech meant to delay Congresional actions- a stall tactic.
SEGREGATION
To separate people by race. (like in places such as theaters and trains)
