How many floors is considered a high rise structure?
5 floors or more above ground
What are the two basic styles of high rise construction designs?
Centre Core Construction

Centre Hall Construction

Describe Centre Core Construction.
  • Have a concrete continuum design (extends upward floor to floor) that contains the stairwells, elevator shafts, utility and HVAC systems.
  • Typical for office spaces.
  • Code requires floor trusses have 2 hours fire rating.
  • Typically window's don't open.
Describe Centre Hall Construction
As the name implies have offices or apartments that are found on either side of a centre hall. Stairwells are found at the end of the hallways BUT the elevators and utility shafts are centrally located with the building.

What are the most common stairwell designs encountered? (4)

Straight run

Scissor run

Return run

Circular stairs

Describe Circular stairs.
Found in high rise structures as a convenience stairway serving two floors occupied by the same tenant. These stairs are not normally part of the egress system for the building.
What is the difference between a protected and unprotected stairwell?
An unprotected stairwell is not considered part of the emergency egress system (convenience system).

A protected stairwell is an enclosed fire rated shafts that serve primarily for emergency egress paths for the occupants.

When using an elevator, what floor do you get off?
Exit 2 floors below reported fire floor.

Also, need to test elevator operation by stopping at floor #2.

What equipment should you bring in the elevator car? (2)

Extinguisher

Irons

How many FF's can you put in elevator car?
6
At what floor, can FF's start to utilize the elevator?
6th floor or higher
Define Standpipe System.
An arrangement of piping, valves, hose connections and allied equipment installed in a building or structure.
What is the purpose of the standpipe system?
To shorten the length of supply and fire attack hose lines.
What is a standpipe?
The riser portion of the system piping that delivers the water supply for hose connections and sprinklers on combined systems vertically from floor to floor.
What are the 3 types of standpipe systems?
Dry System

Wet System

Wet/Dry Combination

Describe a Dry System standpipe system.
Not filled with water until needed in firefighting. Used only by firefighters. Must be manually charged by fire department.
Describe a Wet System standpipe system.
Filled with water and is pressurized at all times.
Describe a Wet/Dry Combination System standpipe system.
Portions of the system are pressured with water and other portions are pressured with air.
What are the 3 classes of standpipe systems?
Class I - provides 65mm hose line connections (usually in stairwells)

Class II - provides 38mm hose cabinets that may be used by either occupants or firefighters

Class III - provides both a Class I and Class II standpipe system

When ascending the building , what should you check on the standpipe system?
Check for open or damaged standpipe valves (this will ensure necessary pressure)
Prior to connecting 65mm hose to standpipe, what should you do to ensure no debris/blockage?
Briefly flush the system
If the ground level standpipe connection is damaged, what should you do?
String 65mm hose to nearest interior connection to charge the system
What are used for responses to High Rise events, SOP's or SOG's?
SOG's

What are the main sectors assigned at High Rise Emergency Events? (10)

  • Lobby Control
  • Elevator Control
  • Recon Sector
  • Fire Attack
  • Search and Rescue Sector
  • Ventilation Sector
  • RIC
  • Evacuation Sector
  • Interior Staging Sector
  • REHAB Sector
What are the functions of Lobby Control?
  • Locate key box and obtain contents
  • Locate annunciator panel – advise Fire Command
  • Locate Fire Control room
  • Locate on-site personnel (maintenance, security, management)
  • Locate and control elevators as needed (assign a FF to elevator control per our department S.O.G.)
  • Locate and control stairwells, entrance/exits
  • If necessary establish communications within building
  • Direct occupants to exits in case of evacuation
What is the minimal equipment required for Recon sector?
High Rise Kits

TIC

For High Rise events, when might Fire Attack be assigned?
Based on findings of RECON/LOBBY and size up – smoke showing or working fire
In what order are floors searched in high rise events? (5)
1. Fire Floor

2. Floor above fire floor(s)

3. Floor below fire floor(s)

4. Top Floor

5. All other floors, starting with top floor down

Describe the marking system used in search and rescue.
Primary search crew checks rooms/floors using an "X" with a "P" on top (one line at start of search, and a second line once search complete).

The crew doing a Secondary search does the same, but puts "S" on top.

Code standards state that how many stairwells provide roof access?
At least one
What are some key considerations for the ventilation sector in a high rise structure? (5)
  • Stairwells/Elevator shafts provide natural vent shafts
  • Maintain control over roof access door
  • Be aware of smoke stratification (may not reach roof)
  • Use caution when using windows for ventilation
  • Consider using high vol PPV fans
Where is RIC sector staging?
2 floors below lowest fire floor

(needs to be separate from general equipment staging area).

When can "Shelter in Place" be used in high rise events?
The location and extent of fire may warrant the occupants NOT in immediate danger to be ‘sheltered in place’.
What is limited or partial evacuation of a high rise?
The partial evacuation of occupants on the fire floor and a designated number of floors above and below the fire floor
Where is Interior Staging Sector established?
2 floors below lowest fire floor

(must insure sufficient space available for both equipment and manpower).

What are some examples of equipment to brought to staging area in high rise event?
  • Spare SCBA cylinders and harnesses
  • Forcible entry tools
  • Hi rise Kits and irons
  • Smoke ejectors and power cords
  • Medical and Rehab supplies
Where is the REHAB sector established?
Away from the event site and intended to be used for rest
When do crews rotate through the REHAB sector?
In cases where SCBA is used, after 2 cylinders or at 45 - 60 minutes intervals.
How many bags comprises the Hi Rise Kits?
2

- a red bag (22 Kgs) and a green bag (21 Kgs)

What is included in the Red Hi Rise Kit bag? (13)
1 - Pre-connected, 3m length of 65 mm hose and gated wye

1 - Length 44 mm Hose

1 -Rope Drop Bag

2 - Sprinkler Wedges

2 - Sprinkler Dowels

3 - Door Wedges

1 - Pipe Wrench

1 - Hose key

1 - Uni-Driver

10 - Rubber Door Stops

1 - Recessed Sprinkler Wedge

4 - Markers (Primary/Secondary Search)

What is included in the Green Hi Rise Kit bag? (2)
2 - Lengths of 44 mm hose with attached Akron nozzle
What is defined as a Walk Up Apartment?
Considered as an apartment or condo style building that is under 5 stories in height and may not have an elevator.
What are some considerations with regards to Walk Up Apartments?
  • Centre hall design is the most common
  • Elevators may not be on site (SOG's state don't use 5 floors or less)
  • Alarms systems may be upgraded
  • Smoke/heat detectors may be in hallway or suite or both
  • Stairwells usually at end of halls
  • Standpipes/sprinklers systems may be on site
  • Usually have common attic space
