Phages
A parasitic virus in DNA
Double-Helix
A pair of parallel helices intertwined about a common axis, esp. that in the structure of the DNA molecule
Semiconservative model
Type of DNA replication in which the replicated double helix consists of one old strand, derived from the old molecule, and one newly made strand.
Origins of replication
a particular sequence in a genome at which replication is initiated
Replication Fork
The unwound region of the DNA double helix in which replication takes place
DNA Polymerase
the enzyme responsible for DNA replication
Leading Strand
During DNA replication, the strand that is synthesized in the 5′ to 3′ direction by continuous polymerization at the growing 3′ tip.
Lagging Strand
During DNA replication, the strand that is synthesized in the 3′ to 5′ direction by ligation of short DNA strands synthesized discontinuously in the 5′ to 3′ direction.
DNA ligase
In recombinant DNA technology, an enzyme that seals together two DNA fragments from different sources to form a recombinant DNA molecule
Primer
Short stretch of RNA synthesized on a DNA template. It is required by DNA polymerases to start their DNA synthesis.
Primase
DNA primase is an RNAP enzyme involved in the replication of DNA.
Helicase
A protein that unwinds DNA at replication forks.
Mismatch Repair
A system for recognizing and repairing erroneous insertion, deletion and mis-incorporation of bases that can arise during DNA replication and recombination, as well as repairing some forms of DNA damage.
Nuclease
An enzyme that cleaves the chains of nucleotides in nucleic acids into smaller units
Excision Repair
Repair of damaged DNA by removal of the damaged segment of DNA and its replacement with a newly synthesized correct segment.
