Lincoln Douglass debates

This was a series of seven debates in the 1858 Illinois senatorial campaign during wich Douglass and Lincoln staked out their differing opinions on the issue of slavery. Pg 494

Fredrick Douglass

The strongest social critique was Fredrick Douglass's starkly simple autobiography, "narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglas" wich told of how he was brutally treated as a slave. Pg #495

Emily Dickson experimented with unrhymed and off rhyme verse. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. Although part of a prominent family with strong ties to its community, Dickinson lived much of her life in reclusive isolation. Pg #494

Harriet beecher stowe

Harriet Stowe wrote the. Let successful novel of the mid 19th century about slavery. This was Uncle Tom's cabin. She combined the popular of then popular women's domestic novels with vivid details of slavery culled from fist hand accounts of northern abolishinist and escaped slaves. Stowe was the daughter of the reforming clergymen Lyman Beecher. Pg # 496

Fugitive slave act

This was part of the compromise of 1850 that required the authorities I the north to assist southern slave catchers and return runaway slave to their owners. This caused conflict between the north and south. Pg #501

Bleeding Kansas

Kansas was being occupied by both pro and anti slave people. This Is because it was a popular sovereignty state so they wanted to occupy the most territory to make it either a free state or slave state. This led to conflict between the two groups like raids and burning towns and killings. Pg #507

John brown

John brown was a grim old man who led his sons in a raid of pro slavery settlers of pottawatomie Creek killing 5 unarmed people. This resulted in a wave of violence. Pg #507

Know Nothing

Know Nothing was a political party stemming from the broken Whig party and dissatisfied democratic party. They were called the know nothings because when they wee questioned about their beliefs they responded with I know nothing. Pg #509

Pro slavery draft written I 1857 by Kansas territorial delegates elected under questionable circumstances; it was rejected by two governors, supported by President Buchanan and decisively defeated Congress. Pg #512

Panic of 1857

Banking crisis that caused a credit crunch in the north. It was less severe in the south as it was sin the north. This is because cotton prices spurred a quick recovery. Pg #513
