Free Soil Party
What- A third party political group that pushed for anti slavery in the new western territories.
When- 1848- 1854
Significance- Showed that there were radicals in the government that really wanted to abolish slavery in the country. They believed that their system was far superior in many aspects to the system of slavery.
Fugitive Slave Law
What- Declared that all runaway slaves that were caught be returned to their owners.
When- 1850
Significance- was one aspect of an agreement between the north and south, however, the North did not always obey the law to return the captured slaves.
Harriet Tubman
Who- African American anti slavery activist who helped to free runaway slaves.
When- 1820- 1913
Significance- Helped to free slaves through the underground railroad, recruited soldiers during the civil war, and later fought for women's suffrage.
Ostend Manifesto
What- A document written that described the annexation of Cuba into the United States by purchasing it and that the US would declare war on Spain if they couldn't
When- 1854
Significance- Showed the great lengths that the US would go to to help them reach their Manifest Destiny.
Kansas Nebraska Act
What- An agreement that allowed the states of Kansas and Nebraska to be admitted into the Union and allow them to decide if they would allow slavery in their states.
When- 1854
Significance- It repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and led to some bitter conflicts along the Kansas border.
Wilmot Proviso
What- A leading cause of the outbreak of the Civil War, it stated that there would be no slavery in the new lands acquired from Mexico or any new land in the Future.
When- 1864
Significance- caused outrage in the south and helped to lead to the Civil War, if passed it would have stonewalled slavery's expansion into the West.
William Lloyd Garrison
Who- An american abolitionist and writer.
When- 1805- 1879
Significance- Wrote "The Liberator" abolitionist news paper and fought for women's suffrage, also promoted immediate emancipation of the slaves.
Fredrick Douglas
Who- An escaped slave who later became one of the most prominent abolitionists and writers of his time.
When- 1818- 1895
Significance- was a living counter example to southern slave holders that argued that African Americans did not have the intellectual capacity to function as a useful part of American society.
Popular Sovereignty
What- A belief that all power of the state came not from the government, but from the people of the State.
When- First stated in 1320
Significance- Stated that power should be from the people, not from the government.
Underground Railroad
What- Informal series of slave escape routes.
When- 19th century
Significance- helped many slaves escape to freedom from the south.
Compromise of 1850
What- A list of five bills that helped to defuse the ideas of secession in the South for four years.
When- 1850
Significance- Stopped the south from seceding for four years and avoided the issue of the Wilmot Proviso.
Dred Scott Decision
What- A supreme court case involving a slave's rights.
When- 1857
Significance- The Supreme Court decided that slaves were not citizens and they were not protected under the Constitution of the United States and that the Federal government could not interfere with regional laws.
Panic of 1857
What- An economic downturn of the world economy.
When- 1857
Significance- Did not last very long but the level of prosperity in the United States did not rise back up to what it was pre- panic until the end of the Civil War.
Uncle Tom's Cabin
What- A novel that revealed the evils of slavery in the South to the unexposed people of the North.
When- Published in 1852
Significance- gave Northerners a feel of what it was like for slaves in the South during the Civil War.
Bleeding Kansas
What- A series of bloody conflicts between anti slavery and pro slavery people along the Kansas border with Missouri.
When- 1854- 1860
Significance- Was a sign of things to come during the Civil War, states fighting against each other for what they believed was right.
Crittenden Compromise
What- A series of amendments to the Constitution of the United States that would have given in to many demands of the South but was rejected quickly by the Senate and the House of Representatives.
When- 1860
Significance- The sudden and immediate rejection of the proposal by Abraham Lincoln pushed the South to the final road to secession.
Fort Sumter
What- A military fort where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.
When- First shots fired were in 1861
Significance- Marked the beginning of the bloodiest war the United States has ever fought in.
Jefferson Davis
Who- President of the Confederate States of America.
When- 1861- 1865
Significance- Led the states that had seceded from the United States into a costly war with the United States.
Anaconda Plan
What- A plan to Surround the Confederacy and basically starve it into submission.
When- Announced April 1861
Significance- It was supposed to be a bloodless strategy to subdue the south bu was never able to be realized in its purest form.
Robert E. Lee
Who- General During the Civil War who fought for the Confederacy.
When- 1807- 1870
Significance- Was one of the best generals who served during the Civil War
Morril Tarrif Act
What- Protective tarrif that raised rates to protect and encourage industry and high wages for industrial workers.
Homestead Act
What- Gave 160 acres of undeveloped Federal land which included free slaves, must live on the land for at least five years and be 21 years or older.

What- Created to issue paper money to finance the Civil war without raising taxes.
Pacific Railway Act
What- Promoted the construction of the Pacific railway construction through government bonds and grants of land to railroad companies.
