Free Soul Party

Held that any new state would not have slavery but that fugitive save laws would be put first and all of them would be returned.

The decision that a black slave could not sue in a court of law because he did not have citizenship o ownership of himself to therefore he does not have rights to sue against.

Was a Panic in the city of New York after the people found that money was declining for all and poverty was rising.

book written depicting the terrors and injustices of slavery for all black slaves. Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Bleeding Kansas
The effect after many pro-slavery people moved to Kansas in hopes of making it for slaves but when it failed rioting broke out and fighting ensued. against abolitionists and locals.
Crittenden Compromise
Was a rejected plan that was going to stop the secession. It had several parts to it that were mad by the governor of Kentucky, Crittenden.

The place at which the first battle of the Civil War took place and the confederates won by numbers.

President of the confederacy but more of a general for the battle than a leader for the people. Took into his own accord strategies and battle plans.
Anaconda Plan
The plan by the Union to separate the confederacy through the Mississippi River and cutting off their communications.
Robert E. Lee
One of the leading generals in the confederacy and known for his zeal in battle and never quiting despite numbers not being on his side.
Ulysses S. Grant
One of the leading generals of the civil a war for the union army and one of Lincolns trusted generals.

Ships built of iron that were indestructible and very useful during the war to both sides although they couldn't sink each other.
Battle of Antietam
One of the bloodiest days in battle against McClellan and lee as they fought in Maryland as the union general followed Lee down the Maryland border and fought with him but let hi go back and regroup instead of finishing him.
Emancipation Proclamation
Proclamation that all slaves in the confederacy were free from labor. Made by Lincoln and signed by him.
54th Regiment
Regiment of entirely black men that helped show the worth of black soldiers to white soldiers and bring up there status.
Morrill Tariff Act 1861
Was made to ensure safe trade in the US and internationally by putting tariffs.
Homestead Act 1862
Act made by Lincoln to encourage population in lands farther west.
Legal Tender Act 1862
It was enacted to issue paper money during the civil war and prevent a raise in taxes. Their was controversy about it as it devalued gold and previous precious metals and previous debts could be paid with paper money.
Pacific Railway Act 1862
It was made to help the growth of the railways and telegraph poles throughout the US and was signed by congress and Lincoln. Granted land to the government to be used for the railroad.
National Bank Act 1863
It was two federal laws that placed that the US should have a national currency that corresponds with the US treasury.
Battle of Vicksburg
Was the final major action f the Vicksburg campaign. Grant continued to attack and was able to cut off supplies into the town to force garrison to surrender an finally the union gained control of the Mississippi.
Battle of Gettysburg
This battle in Gettysburg is seen as the turning point in the war. general Meade's Potomac army defeated the attacks from Lee and ended his campaign into the North.
Copperheads
Were a group that wholly opposed the civil war and called for immediate peace treaty without fighting.
New York Draft Riots 1863
The riots were a rather large opposition to the newly passed draft las that had many more men in the war. Lincoln sent regiments to calm the fray. It was mostly of working class men who were mad that wealthier men could afford not to go.
Appomattox
The place at which the treaty was written for Lees surrendering of his troops to the US over to Grant.
Trent Affair
Also known as the Mason And SIidell Affair The USS San Jacinto intercepted a ship with British mail and two representatives who were going to Great Britain and France to press the diplomatic recognition of the Confederacy. The two representatives, Mason and Slidell, were later released and a dismissal of the action was taken.
