Apply Extinction

-identify the reinforcer that maintains the problem behaviour

- eliminate/remove/ stop the reinforcing consequence for the behaviour

- a behaviour that is no longer reinforced will decrease in frequency and stop

Steps in Using Extinction

1. Collect Data to Assess Treatment effects

-record the behaviour before and after extinction to determine whether the behaviour decreased when extinction was implemented

- behavioural definition, reliable data collection method, baseline assessment

2. Identify the reinforcer for the problem behaviour (FBA/FA)

- identify the specific reinforcer for the problem behaviour so that you can eliminate it in an extinction procedure

- cannot just assume that a particular reinforcer is maintaining a problem behaviour

- the success of extinction procedure depends on whether the particular reinforcer maintaining the problem behaviour has been identified

3, Eliminate the reinforcer after each instance of the problem behaviour

5 Questions/considerations when eliminating the reinforcer after each instance of problem behaviour

A. Have you identified the reinforcer? is it attention, escape, sensory, tangible

B. can you eliminate the reinforcer- is it controllable, who is the change agent in control of the reinforcer

-if the change agent has no control over the reinforcer, extinction cannot be implemented

C.

C. is Extinction safe to use?- could it result in harm to the person exhibiting the problem behaviour or others in the immediate environment. e.g. ignoring bolting near roads

D.

Can an extinction burst be tolerated- an increase in frequency, duration and intensity of the behaviour

- or novel behaviours and emotional responses

MUST

1. inform change agents to expect a burst

2. Instruct Change agents to persist

3. plan for burst with behaviour crisis management

E.

Can consistency be maintained?- problem behaviour at risk of being reinforced intermittently which maintains the problem behaviour over time

-reinforcer must NEVER follow the behaviour

- all change agents must be trained to use procedure correctly

4.Reinforce Alternative Behaviours

- extinction procedure decreases the frequency of the problem behaviour and the reinforcement procedure increases an alternative behaviour to replace the problem behaviour

5. Promote Generalization

after the behaviour is extidguied can you generalize it across settings,. the problem behaviour will stop in all relevant circumstances

maintenance-- the behaviour change will last over time.
