What is an Indicator Organism?

Used to measure fecal contamination to assess water quality. E.Coli is commonly used

What are four properties of an indicator organism?

1) easy to detect

2) only natural environment of the microbe is associated with feces and should always be present

3) should not grow outside of its natural environment

4)should survive longer than most viable pathogen but not too long as historical events are detected

What are Coliforms?

Closest to fulfilling the four properties as an indicator organism and measures contamination in the water.

Subset of the Enterics.. non-sporeforming, facultatively anaerobe, gram negative and ferments lactose + acid + gas

What is Enterics?

A large group of gram negative, non sporulating, short rods.. the Enterobacteriacoea species

What is a fecal coliform?

type of coliform exclusively associated with fecal matters of warm blooded animals. E coli is a good indicator for fecal pollution because they do not last long enough outside the host and can be differentiated from the others by selective media and 44.5* incubation

How to quantify Bacteria in Food and Water?

Use either the Coliert test with MPN quantification or serial dilution with plate count

Coliert Test

Predicts the MPN of coliform and fecal coliform present in water samples.

How are positives determined in the coliert test?

Using ONPG and MUG which turns yellow or fluorescent
