Acromegaly
Chronic disease characterized by a gradual enlargement and elongation of the bones of the face, jaw, and extremities caused by overproduction of growth hormone and treated by x-ray or surgery
Addison's disease/hypodrenocorticism.
Results from deficiency in secretion of adrenocortical hormones due to Cortex of adrenal gland being damaged. Most common cause of this-result of body attacking itself (autoimmune disease). Not age or gender related. Diagnosis - blood and urine tests that measure amount of corticosteroid hormones present. Addison's - level of the hormones is very low. Early stage treatment=replacement of adrenocortical hormones and supplemental sodium.
Adenoma
Tumor of a gland
Adenosis
Any disease condition of a gland
Adrenopathy
Any disease of the adrenal gland
CHT/Congenital hypothyroidism.
Conditions that affects infants from birth (congenital) & results from partial or complete loss of thyroid function (hypothyroidism). CHT occurs when thyroid gland fails to develop or function properly. 80%-85% of cases, thyroid gland is absent, abnormally located or severly reduced in size. Remaining cases-thyroid gland is present, but production of thyroid hormones is decreased or absent. If untreated, congenital hypothyroidism leads to mental retardation and abnormal growth. In developing countries, newborns tested for CHT, and if treatment abegins in first month after birth, infants usually develop normally.
Cretinism
Congenital condition caused by deficiency in secretion of the thyroid hormones and characterized by arrested physical and mental development; treatment consists of appropriate thyroid replacement therapy
Cushing's disease
Results from hypersecretion of cortisol; symptoms include fatigue, muscular weakness, and changes in body appearance. Prolonged administration of large doses of ACTH can cause Cushing's syndrome-characterized by buffalo hump and a moon face.
Diabetes
General term used to describe diseases characterized by excessive discharge of urine
Dwarfism
Condition of being abnormally small
Exophthalmic
Pertaining to an abnormal protrusion of the eye as often seen in exophtalmic goiter or exophthalmos seen in Graves’ disease
Galactorrhea
Excessive secretion of milk after cessation of nursing
Gigantism
Condition of being abnormally large
Hirsutism
Abnormal condition characterized by excessive growth of hair, especially in women
Hypergonadism
Condition of excessive secretion of the sex glands
Hyperinsulinism
Condition of excessive amounts of insulin in the blood
Hyperkalemia
Condition of excessive amounts of potassium in the blood
Hyperthyroidism
Condition caused by excessive secretion of thyroid hormone that can affect many body systems
Hypogonadism
Condition caused by deficient internal secretion of the gonads
Hypoparathyroidism
Deficient internal secretion of the parathyroid glands
Hypothyroidism
Deficient secretion of the thyroid hormone, a condition that can affect many body systems
Lethargic
Pertaining to drowsiness, sluggish
Myxedema
Literally means condition of mucus swelling; the most severe form of hypothyrodism, it is characterized by marked edema of the face, a somnolent look, and hair that is stiff and without luster
Pituitarism
Any condition of the pituitary gland
Progeria
Condition of premature old age occurring in childhood
Simmonds’ disease/Panhypopituitarism
Condition in which complete atrophy of the pituitary gland causes loss of function of the thyroid, adrenals, and gonads.
Thymitis
Inflammation of the thymus gland
Thyroiditis
Inflammation of the thyroid gland
Thyrotoxicosis
Poisonous condition of the thyroid gland caused by hyperactivity
Virilism
Condition of masculinity developed in a woman
