Humanism

An intellectual movement of the Renaissance, based on the study of the classics, literary works of ancient Greeks and Romans.

Petrach

The father of Italian Renaissance humanism, did more to the development of humanism than any other person. Set out to discover Latin manuscripts, and emphasised pure Latin instead of Medieval Latin.

Vernacular

The language spoken in a region such as Frecnch, Italian or German.

Dante

An Italian author who along with the English author Chaucer, made Vernacular writting popular. Wrote "Divine Comedy", a tale of a soul's journey to salvation.

Chaucer

An English author who along with Italian author Dante, made the Vernacular literature popular. His writing and dialect are the main ancestors of the modern English Language.

Canterbury

A city in England. Served as a plot city in Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales"

Christine de Pizan

A French woman and author who, also in Vernacular writing, wrote in defence of women that they could learn as much as men is offered the same oppertunities.

Fresco

A painting made on fresh, wet plaster, with the use of water-based paints.

Rapheal

An incredibly talented painter, who at the age of 25, was one of the best in Italy. Admired for his madonnas (paintings of Virgin Mary).

Michelangelo

An accomplished and famous painter and sculptor, some of his most famous and remembered works are the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

Flanders

One of the Low Countries (modern day Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands) which held the most important northern school of art.

Jan van Eyck

A Flemish painter who was one of the first to master oil painting.

Albercht Durer

A northern artist greatly influenced by the Italians methods. One famous work of art is the Adoration of the Magi.
