Aprendamos 2: Expressing a sequence of events in the past
Sequence of tenses in the subjunctive
When the action of the dependent clause happens at the same time in the past as the action of the main verb...
...then the imperfect subjunctive is used in the dependent clause.
example: past perfect

Mis abuelos nos habían regalado los pasajes para que tuviéramos nuestra luna de miel en Italia.
My grandparents had given us the tickets so that we could have our honeymoon in Italy.
When the action of the subordinate clause happens before the action of the main verb...
... then the pluperfect subjunctive is used in the subordinate clause.
example: past perfect

Nos habíamos alegrado de que tu boda hubiera sido tan elegante.
We were glad that your wedding had been so elegant.
