Vasocongestion
The engorgement of the blood vessels of various organs, especially the genitals, that occurs during sexual arousal.
Orgasm
A sudden release of tension that is almost always experienced as being intensely pleasurable.
Sexual dysfunctions
Inhibitions of sexual desire and interference with the physiological responses leading to orgasm.
Hypoactive sexual desire
A disorder classified by a lack of sexual fantasies and lack of interest in sexual experiences.
Sexual aversion disorder
A disorder classified by a fear of sexual encounters that has reached intense proportions.
Erectile dysfunction
Difficulties that men experience, either in obtaining an erection that is sufficient enough to accomplish intercourse or maintaining an erection long enough to satisfy themselves and their partners during intercourse.
Female sexual arousal disorder
Impaired sexual arousal in females that occurs when she cannot either achieve or maintain genital responses, such as lubrication and swelling, that are necessary to complete sexual intercourse.
Premature ejaculation
A condition in which men are unable to prolong the period of sexual excitement long enough to complete intercourse.
Orgasmic disorder
Disorders related to achieving orgasm, in both men and women.
Generalized orgasmic impairment (in women)
A term describing a disorder in which a woman has never experienced orgasm by any means.
Situational orgasmic impairment (in women)
A term describing a disorder in which a woman is able to reach orgasm in some situations, but not in others.
Dyspareunia
Persistent genital pain experienced by some people during or after sexual intercourse (much more common in women).
Vaginismus
A disorder in which an involuntary muscular spasm prevents sexual intercourse as well as other activities, such as the insertion of tampons or vaginal examinations.
Excessive sexual desire
A disorder NOT listed in the DSM-IV-TR, but described in the ICD-10; symptoms include such behaviors as seeking new sexual encounters out of boredom with old ones, frequent use of pornography, and legal problems resulting from sexual behaviors.
Sensate focus
Masters & Johnson's cornerstone of sex therapy; a series of simple exercise in which a couple spends time in a relaxed, quiet setting, learning to touch each other.
Paraphilias
A state of sexual arousal associated with unusual things and situations, such as inanimate objects, sexual contact with children, exhibiting their genitals to strangers, or inflicting pain on another person.
Fetishism
The association of sexual arousal with nonliving objects (most commonly involving women's underwear, shoes and boots, rubber, or leather).
Transvestic fetishism
Cross-dressing for the purpose of sexual arousal (generally a fetish held by straight, rather than gay, men).
Drag queens
Cross-dressing by gay men, different from transvestic fetishism.
Sexual masochism
Recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, urges, or impulses involving being humiliated, beaten, bound, or otherwise made to suffer.
Sexual sadism
Intense, sexually arousing fantasies, urges, or behaviors that involve the psychological or physical suffering of a victim. Often, these fantasies involve asserting dominance over another individual.
Exhibitionism
A disorder where, over a period of at least six months, an individual experiences recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving exposure of one's genitals to an unsuspecting stranger.
Voyeurism
A disorder where the focus is the act of observing an unsuspecting person, usually a stranger, who is naked, in the process of disrobing, or engaging in sexual activity.
Frotteurism
A fetish in which a person who is fully clothed becomes sexually aroused by touching or rubbing his genitals against other, non-consenting people.
Pedophilia
A fetish entailing recurrent, intense, sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child (generally age 13 years or younger).
Incest
A term referring to sexual activity between close blood relatives, such as father-daughter, mother-son, or between siblings.
Rape
Acts involving non-consensual sexual penetration obtained by physical force, by threat of bodily harm, or when the victim is incapable of giving consent by virtue of mental illness, mental retardation, or intoxication.
Gender identity
Our sense of ourselves as being either male or female.
Gender identity disorder
A sense of discomfort and the feeling that one's anatomy and their gender identity do not match up.
Pseudohermaphroditism
A condition in which genetically male individuals are unable to produce a hormone responsible for shaping the penis and scrotum in the fetus, resulting in the child being born with ambiguous genitalia.
Sex-reassignment surgery
An elective surgical procedure in which a persons genitals are changed to math their gender identity.
