What is race?
The division of people based on physical characteristics.
(white,black,asian)
What is ethnicity?
Ethnicity is the classification of people who share a common cultural, linguistic, or ancestral heritage.
(arab,german, italian, jewish, cuban, hispanic)
"Race is nothing but a pigment of the imagination"
Means we classify people based off of pigment but it has a bigger meaning.
Majority Group
The group that has the largest population in society and holds significant power and privelage.
Minority Group
The group that has a smaller population and less power than the majority group. Luis Wirth assigns minority group status to people who are singled out for unequal treatment.
Dominant Group
The group that has the greatest power but not necessarily the greatest numbers
Colonialism
The imposition of control over a weak nation by a more powerful country.
Racism
Discrimination based on a person's race.
Racism according to Graves
According to graves, racism in the IS has relied on three assumptions that often go unchallenged. 1. Races exist. 2. each race has distinct genetic differences. 3. racial inequality is due to those differences.
Genocide
Extreme example of racism. The attempt to destroy or exterminate a pple based on their race or ethnicity. ( holocaust, rwanda)
What are hate groups
Organizations that promote hostility and violence towards others based on race and other factors.
Conquest
The domination over a group of people by a superior force. Like when a group uses its superior military to dominate another
Annexation
The incorporation of one territory into another. Under this system, members of ethnic andracial groups are forced to become members of a new society
Voluntary Immigration
The willing movement of people from one society to another.
(may be a variety of reasons why. sometimes countries arent welcoming to these immigrants)
INvoluntary immigration
The forced movement of people from one society to another. ( bringing millions of african to american against their own free will)
ethnic cleansing
Persecution thru imprisonment, expulsion, or murder of members of an ehhnic minority by a mahority to achieve ethnic homogeneity in majority controlled territory.
Migrant superordination
Occurs when a more powerful group enters an area and conquers the native population.
Indigenous superordination
The subordination of an imigrant group to a dominate group. ( Immigrants that come to america are expected to learn all of our ways.
Pluralistic Minorities
Groups that enter into an area voluntarily but seek to maintain their own culture while also adapting to the dominatn group
Assimilationist Minorities
Groups that seek to shed their old ways to integrate themselves into mainstream society.
Secessionist Minorities
Groups that voluntarily seperate themselves from the dominatn group and view the dominant group with disdain, believeing hat it will corrupt the groups belief system. For examples,s AMish. They have amish schools and everything else.
Militant Minorities
Groups that seek the overthrow of existing systems because they see it as unjust. They may take a path of violence and war.
Ethnic Enclaves
Neighborhoods where people from simular cultures live togetherand assert culture distinction from the dominant group. (China town, spanish harlem)
Prejudice
Negative attitudes about an entire category of people
Stereotypes
Simplified perceptions people have of an entire group, usually based on false assumptions
Discrimination
Unfair treatment of people based on prejudice
Institutional discrimination
Maintains an advantage for the dominant group while providing the appearance of fairness to others. ( seperate but equal) Also schools in poor neighborhoods are more underfunded
Scapegoat
Making a unfair accusation against a person or group as the cause of a problem
Segregation
Forced seperation because of factors such as race, gender, or ethnicity
Cycle of Poverty
Generational barrier that preents poor people from breaking into the middle and upper classes.
education
One of the most important factors in determining income is education. With the exception of asians, minorities tend to have low educational attainment.
Color blind racism
The idea that racism still exists in society in more subtle ways.
Double Consciousness

The sense that a person must keep a foot in two worlds. One in the majority group world and one in the minority group world
Affirmative Action
Social policy designed to help minority groups gain opportunites through employment and education. Legal affirmative action means that aif all candidates are equal an employer or college may use minority status as a deciding factor. This is only ok if they are all qualified.
